So not quite the same because I had infertility for my first as well, but I wound up doing 3 FETS (and one fresh retrieval) just to get my second child. It was tough - much harder than my first. Not only because I had more losses/less success, but just managing appointments, bouts of bed rest after transfers, etc. All that being said, it was totally and completely worth it because I just could not picture us as a family of 3 and ached with the feeling something was missing.

However, I always wanted 3 children, but after all that, I am not willing to put my body and family through all of that again. At this point, if something were to happen naturally I would be thrilled but it is not worth it to us to persue outside treatments because we also feel complete as we are.

so all that to say, I think it comes down how much you want that larger family and if it is worth the sacrifices to get it, or if you could be content with your family the size it is.

Definitely not an easy decision, and really such a personal one that no one can make that decision but you.

I was in a similar situation. At my OB, I tried Clomid and Femera with sporadic monitoring so that we can do a trigger shot and try IUI. Both Clomid and Femera didn't really work. The sporadic monitoring of follicle growth also didn't show the big picture (I suspected that my follicles grow at later rate than normal)

We switched to RE and they said we could try injectbles like GonalF (?) or go straight to IVF. After debating and my husband balking at IVF prices, we did injectible shots, like almost everyday monitoring of follicle growth, trigger shot, and IUI. Thankfully, it worked on first try. But getting to the IuI stage took months. The pros of RE office was they were flexible and used what they saw on the visits to change up the dosage, add more dosage, allow more monitoring time, etc

@ElbieKay: I don't have much insight - we're still trying for our first - but I just wanted to say I'm sorry for what you've been through and wish you luck. Perhaps you might find more people with insight if you posted directly to the IVF board?

I've also thought a bit about how difficult the disappointment must be with IVF. I recently had a somewhat drawn out miscarriage, and at every ultrasound they would ask if we'd transferred embryos. The loss was hard for me but I kept on thinking how much worse it must be for people who have done IVF, especially if it's their last shot at it.

we have a 4 year old. we had 3 miscarriages after she turned 2, getting pregnant on our own and then went straight to IVF. We had 1 retrieval with 3 frozen transfers (2 negative transfers, 1 pregnancy of twins that ended in m/c) and are now trying a different clinic for our last try and hoping we get a 2nd kiddo out of this new clinic! it is a lot mentally, physically, and financially, but we decided it was important to us to just try. If this round of IVF is unsuccessful, we plan on utilizing a gestational carrier (if we have extra embryos to do so) or we will be starting adoption paperwork (which we were going to do regardless and will do even if our IVF is successful, but the agency we want to use will not allow it if you are actively involved in IVF)

I will be 40 next month. My husband is 41. We have a 3yo and would like a second child. We've been trying for a little over a year and had exactly one bfp which resulted in a miscarriage last winter. We have had all the standard infertility tests run, and our diagnosis is simply unexplained infertility. Ugh.

We are about to attempt a second cycle of Clomid + IUI, but honestly I am sort of expecting it to fail just like the last one did. If it does fail, I think we will either quit or try one round of IVF because our clinic severely discounts the first round.

But I don't know if I have it in me to deal with IVF. I have a consult scheduled with my doctor to discuss the details. It is so much work and so much money, even discounted. I was really bummed that the first IUI cycle failed, and I'm sure the stress and potential disappointment are much much greater with IVF.

I am torn between giving it a shot versus just stopping treatment.

Has anyone faced a similar decision? What did you decide?
