My sil did ivf with my niece, and had the perfect pregnancy (no morning sickness or anything). She went more than a week past her due date, and had to be induced.

So many different things cause pre-term labor. A big factor would probably be that maternal age if often higher in IVF. And people who have trouble getting pg due to female factors may be due to uterine reasons...

For me...the issue was probably infection or maybe placental tear. Infection could possibly be due to all of the procedures I had to have. Placental tear could have been from anything.

Most pre-term labor is from pre-e or cervical incompetence.

@T.H.O.U.: from what I've read elsewhere, even ivf singletons are expected at more like 37 weeks. I'm not sure if it holds up comparing multiples or not because there are SO many more factors at play there.

@T.H.O.U.: I'm not sure. I think the basis of the article is that it's better to implant one embryo because there's a higher risk of premature birth when implanting two even if you don't end up with twins.

Wouldn't this also really depend on the number of non-twin? Or is this just comparing singleton to singleton and twin to twin pregnancies

Fraternal twins, and induced at 39-2. No complications or preterm scares, but past 39 we were risking postmaturity issues with twins (equivalent to going past 42 with a singleton).

I know A LOT of people who did IVF through blogging. I can think of 3 non-twin that were early at 25 weeks (me), 32 weeks and 36 weeks (Jag).

My sil did IVF and got pregnant with triplets, but she lost 2 of the babies around 20 weeks and had to keep carrying them until delivery. She made it all the way to 37 weeks, and while her daughter is small, she really wasn't that small considering the situation- 5 lb 12 oz. And she didn't have to spend any time in the nicu, she was so healthy!

@swedishfish: My sister had/has other health complications and is very very petite, and was premature herself so who knows what factors played in. I was in college when they were born and it was so scary! I remember holding them and thinking they were just like tiny kittens.. I think they were both between 3 & 4 lbs at birth.

My sister did IVF and delivered twins at... 32 weeks?? I think?? They were very premature and in the NICU for a while. They had a ton of early intervention therapies for physical things but are very bright and relatively healthy now at 7 years old.

I found this about.com article and am wondering what results a poll would show (not the most scientific article but informative nonetheless) - http://preemies.about.com/od/causesofprematurebirth/a/Does-In-Vitro-Fertilization-Cause-Premature-Birth.htm

I am 32 weeks 3 days and implanted two embryos. Both took but I had a vanishing twin. I'm curious as to other women's experiences with IVF and delivering early.
