Talk about awkward! I needed to let him know because we had to go through fertility treatments and I would need time away from the office. He was very supportive and told me stories of friends who had to conceive using fertility treatments. I'm an engineer and the only woman in my department plus the first woman to be pregnant within the company for 7 years. My work hasn't dealt with a pregnant woman for 7 years. Their maternity leave policy isn't clear and I don't think it's been updated in a while, so that stressed me out as well. I finally told my boss when I was around 10 weeks. He was happy for me, but then I found out I lost the baby soon after. I was ok with them knowing so that they understood why I took a week off. Somehow the whole office found out, so now everybody knows I'll be trying again. *sigh* I don't know when I'll tell them the next time. I might tell my boss right away so he understands when I have to take off for doctor appointment and wait to tell the whole office until 12 weeks. I had just been promoted about two weeks before we got a positive pregnancy test and my new role required up to 25% travel, and was for a start up account, ie, very demanding and I was sure that my pregnancy would make me look bad. I ended up telling my boss around 10 weeks. I was very nervous when I told him and I admit that I teared up a little bit (probably pregnancy hormones but I've always been a crier). He was super happy for me and very supportive. I was glad that I got it over with-then I didn't have to dread it anymore! Once you get it over with I hope you are relieved. The kicker is that many women have taken advantage of it in recent years and so I know when I announce they will be happy for me, but secretly thinking "dang, another one taking leave!!" Also there have been a few other lawyers who have left in the past month or so so there's been a lot of changes here.</p> <p>I need to either tell them in the next few days (13 weeks) or at 16+ weeks because I have a big trial starting and won't have time to announce it.
