I tried both times, and both times I ended up puking everything back up anyway. :( I think it just depends on your body and your labor, since some people can keep anything down and some people throw up everything.

After a lot of research I strongly disagree with the hospital practice of banning eating and drinking, so I will be bringing plenty of food and drinks to my birth. Coconut milk is a great option because it's easier to keep down than water and it gives you energy and electrolytes.

Eating in early labor is soooo important for the long haul. Carbs & protein are your friend. Carbs for energy & protein to ward off pre-e (which can come on during labor).

I ate a pb sandwich early on & then a couple boiled eggs around 5 cm. I did throw up but I"m sure I would've regardless b/c I did it when I had significant change in my labor... as I got into active labor & when I hit transition.

Hospitals don't allow eating due to possibility of being put under general anesthesia, thing is not eating and having too much stomach acid can cause the same thing they're trying to prevent.

Next time I hope to do a better job of eating more so I don't get so worn out!

@c.sassy: ha ha, I had to pop Tums while pushing too! The heartburn was so bad that I couldn't concentrate on pushing.

The nurse wouldn't give me anything, so I told my husband to get into my purse and give me my emergency roll of Tums.

I ate quite a bit in early labour, but I ended up puking that up when labour got more intense. Alas, I would do the same thing again. Even if I didn't absorbe it all, I needed all the energy I could get.

I didn't feel like eating all day, but felt I should on the way to the hospital. I threw it all up...

Labor went very fast for me, so I was eating dinner 10 hours after my water broke anyway.

If you do eat, just make sure it isn't something you mind coming back up!

At home, I had a banana.
It came up as soon as I got to the hospital.

After that, all I was offered were popsicles, which were not very good, so I held off until after I was done (2 hours after I got to the hospital) and promptly ordered two burritos and a milkshake :)

At home I ate a peanut butter sandwich, cheese, and hardboiled egg... apparently I was concerned about protein :) Once I got to the hospital it was juice and popsicles, which gave me HORRIBLE heartburn! So I also ate a bunch of Tums while pushing.

No. I went into labor around 4pm. At 1am, I ate something....I can't even remember what it was now! I was so tired. I knew I had to eat something, though. Maybe it was a pb sandwich... Anyways, once I was past 5cm dilated, all I wanted were ice chips.

No, we had just eaten dinner before labor started, and I labored in the middle of the night and it lasted only about 9 hours so I wasn't too hungry anyway. Plus, I think I would've been in too much pain to eat, but I did drink water and juice. I was starving when it was all over though - just in time for breakfast!

I tried to eat a sandwich on the way to the hospital but it made me sick so I didn't finish it. At the hospital I had water while I was in labor though.

I tried to eat afterward but every time I'd eat, they'd come push on my stomach to check my uterus and made me nauseous. I actually didn't have a big appetite for anything other than Sprite and ice cream for two days (the cold and the bubbles were great).

No way... I tried to eat while I was laboring at home but was too nauseous. I managed to get down a little oatmeal, but I was glad I didn't eat anymore, I would definitely have puked! Tried to drink a ton of water though! I wish I had eaten a little more during the early contractions because it was over 20 hours until I ate.

I ate right when I got to the hospital before things got ugly. I had a bagel and cup of chicken noodle soup (at like 8 p.m.) Also drank a bunch of gatorade and water. Got an epidural around midnight though I can't imagine having eaten anything after that anyways (though I did still drink some water). I got really nauseous and started puking around 5 a.m.....DS was here at 6:14 a.m.

My doula is all about eating and drinking during labor - her favorites are Greek yogurt and coconut water. My OB, although she was fine with that, warned me that during labor, "you wear what you eat," and suggested I stick to strictly low fat foods - bananas, etc.

Did you eat and drink during labor? What kind of things tasted good? If you ate, did you end up "wearing it?"
