My baby is 4 weeks old and I'm struggling with my current dislike of breast feeding. We've just been able to quit using a nipple shield so I'm now experiencing the cracked, painful nipples. I'm really trying to push through and I have a lot of guilt over how frustrated I am with it. Around 6-8 weeks we got in a groove &amp; I started getting almost like a buzz when I nursed. Then we went through a pseudo nursing strike for about a month where LO was extremely fussy nursing &amp; I almost quit. That was probably the worst part. I loved it for selfish reasons after that - SO convenient, I lost all my baby weight and then some, it was nice to snuggle with him - but it wasn't a great bonding experience, We found out later that he is lactose intolerant (explained the back arching/squirming while nursing) and we switched to 2 feedings of BM and 4 feedings of hypoallergenic formula at four months. We lasted 1 month like that, with morning and evening nursing, but then he entirely preferred the bottle and I just gave up at five months. I still miss it sometimes. I am actually sad that LO can drain one side (we just do one side per feeding) in ten minutes or less. At the beginning, I really loved it. I swear I could feel the oxytocin making me feel good. Around 3 months, it got frustating with distractions, tugging etc and she nursed all the time. We haven't had any difficulty since DD's tongue tie was clipped, but she is pretty pragmatic about her food. She's perfectly happy to get it from whatever source as long as her belly gets full! So I don't think she views it as "cuddle time" and I don't find it to be a particularly bonding experience. If it wasn't so much easier to just pull out a boob, I'd be just as happy to pump and bottle-feed. It's gotten a bajillion times easier and I'm glad I did it (because I'm not doing it for me, I'm doing it for her) but I'm definitely not all rainbows and unicorns about it. I appreciate that some people do have a magical experience, and I think that's wonderful. That has not been my experience though. </p>
