I had viral meningitis and encephalitis when I was 5 and they feared the worst. They flew specialists in to treat me, they never could figure out how I got it, I couldn't walk due to the extreme dizziness, and I have zero memories of my life before then--I even forgot who some family members and friends were. Thank God I got better and have been relatively healthy every since. Apparently, according to my mom, my personality was never the same after being sick (easygoing to high strung).

Well, let's see...

Broke my collar bone at age 3 by falling backwards off a bench, but I don't think that qualifies as "almost dying".

Had leukemia at age 4. Survived that, somehow. A miracle really, it was gone in that same year. That time spent in the hospital gave me quite a fear of needles though.

Had a bad meningitis scare at age 12, which turned out to be a bad flu coupled with whiplash (In my feverish state I had forgotten about an incident the day before when I got butted off a trailer by a huge ram). Luckily the doctor figured it out right before the spinal tap.

Got so dehydrated and overheated on a hike in the desert at age 13 that I passed out and was unconscious for almost an hour while I was carried off the mesa.

Had giardia at age 16, which was by far the worst pain of my entire life. My dad got it when he was in Saudi Arabia from eating camel meat, I got it from unfiltered water in Albania. Lesson learned - cook EVERYTHING when you're in a third world country!

Late into my mom's pregnancy they couldn't find my heartbeat and I stopped moving completely and they told my parents I would be stillborn. Everyone was in for a huge surprise when I popped out perfectly fine.

I've had some pretty serious asthma issues but never really close to death.

When I was 6 or so I got an infection which spread to my kidneys. Every time I went to the bathroom it was nothing but blood. My parents were hysterical because they had waited way too long to get me to the hospital. I was in so much pain, I remember it vividly.

When I was about seven I was playing in our basement with my mom. In the basement there were a couple metal poles that supported the house. Well mom got a phone call and I was bored waiting for her to get off so I was climbing on one of the poles. Well.. I fell off and hit the back of my head on the corner of the table I had climbed on to get up there. I was fine after some stitches but there was A LOT of blood. Luckily our cleaning lady was there that day. She rode to the ER with us and kept pressure on the wound while my mom drove.

I almost died when I was born. I was 11 weeks early and had all sorts of things wrong including tumours and strokes etc. Funnily enough, I'm actually disgustingly healthy.

On the other hand, I'm surprised my SO survived his childhood. He's had so many near death/dangerous accidents, it's almost scary. Just last night he spent the night in the hospital after he managed to fracture his cheekbone, sprain his wrist and now has a wicked black eye.

Oh, and that reminds me. When DH was about 5, he stuck his head and arm out of the car window to get the mail out of the box, and his knee got wedged on the button that makes the windows go up automatically. His throat got caught by the rising window, and he couldnt get his knee off the button. His dad thankfully was able to rescue him before he stopped breathing.

A day after I was born, when my mum and I were still in hospital, my nose and airways got completely blocked by mucus. My mum was in her bed and didnt see, and the nurse was supposed to be checking me, but she didnt. Then a midwife came in, saw that I was blue and not breathing, rushed me out, and got me to breathe again.

And as a child I almost died from malaria a couple times. I've had it a lot, but those couple times were the worst, and were part of the reason my mother decided to train to be a nurse so that she would know how to treat her children for diseases in a remote location!

I had a seizure once when I was little due to a high fever (like 105 degrees or something) when I was 3, and I was run over by a car when I was 9.

DH had the umblical cord wrapped around his neck when he was being born and almost suffocated to death. MIL had an emergency C-section to try to get him out before he died. Well, the surgeon cut too deep and nicked DH with the blade. The surgeon figured "oh no big deal, it is just his butt". But he was confused and it was actually his face.

This is the best thread ever!! I am literally LOLing at these stories... only because everyone has ended up safe :)

I was hit by a car when I was roller blading-- I think I was about 12 or 13. The driver tried to give me a $20 bill, but I didn't take it because I wasn't supposed to be playing near the busy street and didn't want to get in trouble. She was only going about 15 mph, so I guess I didn't "almost die."

Three times.
First was when I was younger I was home alone with my older brother. I was making a tunnel in the snow outside and my brother was listening to music in his room. I made a tunnel deep into the snow. I thought I had made it wide enough and treid to crawl down into it. Was pretty deep. It fell ontop of me. I struggled for awhile trying to break out but the snow was to heavy on top of me and I "dived in" so my arms were up around my head with my face in the snow. Started to get scared and yelled for my brother. he could not hear me of course. So I waited....it got really hard to breath and got to the point where I couldnt breath and was getting light headed. I was out of energy from fighting I could not even move anymore and began to cry...then i heard a scratching noise. My Dog dug me out.

Second time I was water skiiing and a boater almost hit me. I "cut" away barely missing him.

Third time was a teenager. my BF and I were tubing in a river that had recently flooded but looked safe where we entered. It WAS NOT. try to make a long stroy short with this one, it was wicked crazy and there was a tree down that pinned me to the tree in the water and the tube (bruised my ribs) my friend lost her tube and was clinging onto this tree, I some how managed to get out from being stuck and clmibed across the tree to my friend. She was loosing her grip and I was trying to pull her up. The currents were so strong it slowly pulled her completley under the water but I still had her hand. I remember screaming her name thinking I was going to see her die. I knew I had to let go in hopes she would "pop" back up, if not holding onto her with her under water she would surely die. I let go and about 20yds down she came up. I jumped back in after her thinking nothing of it. I knew I was the stronger swimmer. I got to her and fought for who knows how much longer getting her to the shore. I was so sick from all the water I took in because I kept going under trying to keep her above the water. We had no clue how far we had gone down river or where we were. We found ourselves pretty far down and the first thing we found was a construction site for a new golf course. i can only imagine how we looked, soaking wet and muddy and walking to these men in hard hates in a cleared zone. They didnt beleive us and looked like they saw a ghost when we said we came from the river. One man didnt beleive we came out alive. DUMB teenage moment!

I almost drowned when I was about 3. My parents were at a pool party with us and all the kids were playing around pool. I guess I slipped and fell in without anyone noticing. Luckily, my sister, who was 6 at the time, strolled over to my parents at some point to tell them I was at the bottom of the pool. Pretty sure she was hoping I wouldn't make it. Ahh..sisterly love. :)

My husband almost didn't make it through his delivery. He had a very bad case of meconimum aspiration and had to be air lifted to another hospital.

I broke my arm. lol

I was also showing off to friends when I learned how to rollerblade backwards and I ended up flipping over a truck that was backing out of it's driveway. I still have a scar from that one.

I've never had those scary experiences but when I was in grade 5, I saved my friend's mom from drowning. We were at a pool and for fun my friend's mom was pushed into the pool (they didn't know she couldn't swim) and she started drowning. I am a really good swimming so I dove in and basically pushed her up and out of the water so she could grab the ledge.

I never had any crazy accidents (never even broke a bone exept for my toe) because both my parents and myself were super-protective after I almost died at 6-7 years old. I didn't learn to swim or ride a bike until I was in the 4th grade.

Between a 13 month period, I had 3 major surgeries because of a very rare colon/intestinal issue. In first grade, I had a colostomy for 3 months until it was reversed, which I am still very thankful for. I'm fine now as long as I take medicine everyday and watch what I eat.

The doctors, specialists at a children's hospital, only gave me a 50-50 chance of survival. I remember being poked and prodded, crying for my mom. This has made me scared of simple medical procedures as an adult. All of my doctors have to be extremely patient with me because I get nervous around needles, etc. BUT I am VERY thankful that I am as healthy as I am today, even if it meant I didn't have as "normal" of a childhood as many kids.

I chocked on a piece of candy once and my stepfather turned me upside down to get it out of my throat.

I was running across the beach and almost got run over by a truck. All I remember from that is seeing a huge tire in front of my face.

My stepdad elft me and my younger brothers (who were still in diapers) in the van while he ran into the gas station once. The van must have been running because my youngest brother knocked it into gear and we started rolling backwards. My middle brother jumped out to save us somehow (he was 3). My stepdad and a bunch of other men ran out of the store and stopped the van before it hit a gas pump. I don't think we would have died from that, but I was still scared.

Oh yeah, all of these things happened when I was five or younger.

I was electrocuted when I was 4.

Stuck the end of a TV antenna in a light socket and when my mom came in I was literally bouncing up & down on the ground in a ball... She grabbed me off without even thinking about it.

All I remember is feeling hot all over and sitting in a chair in our living room afterward.

She says I was never the same after that.

You were extreme Mr Bee! I choked on a chip once and my sister had to do the heimlich. I also had a bad horse accident that could have killed me had the horse fallen just a little different, or at least broken my leg if I had been taller (I was a wee one growing up).

I did lots of other crazy things growing up, but nothing like jumping off a moving car!

Childhood can be a very dangerous time in your life! I am actually shocked that I survived.

The worst one for me was when I jumped off a moving car and landed on my face on the asphalt. I am lucky to have survived that one!

Did you ever almost die growing up? Tell us your stories!
