Our we lived near the end of a dead end street and all the kids in the neighborhood would play kick the can and other games outside on the street until the sun went down. I hope to live somewhere my kids can do the same thing. We also would shout "CAR!!" and everyone would run to either side of the street. Now it bothers me when children are in the street! But I live in a much busier neighborhood than I did as a kid. Across the street from my house is a cul-de-sac and the kids will play there, but not on my street. Our driveway is pretty large (think large circle drive) so it wasn't an issue. We were told to come home when the street lights came on. We were definitely free range kids! What boggles my mind most is that our parents let us ride our bikes a couple of miles to "Mr. Paul's" convenience store on roads that had a 45/ hr speed limit and no sidewalk to get candy. I started doing that when I was 8. We live in a housing plan & kids play in the street here, too. Our neighbors play hockey and set up nets and everything! It doesn't bother me.. Though I can see the danger! Parents are always sitting outside and keeping an eye on the kids, whereas when I was younger we weren't quite as supervised! We moved house when I was 7y/o to a street with 8 houses on, all with kids around the same age. We played football, rode our bikes, made dens in the surrounding woods... best part of my younger years! Now that I think about it, it wasn't smart to play touch football on the street. One time I fell and my glasses shattered around my eye... thankfully my eyes were fine and I just had some scarring that's now hidden under my eyebrow. Still though, what was I thinking? I guess I wasn't! But it was a lot of fun and I guess we never thought about the downsides. Did you ever play on the street as a kid?
