I think we stopped because once we didn't have cats to keep the rodents away from it. </p> <p>I would assume it's a tradition that goes back to when people made all their decorations. Corn is fairly inexpensive so it was probably easy to use as a decoration. And food was a popular decoration. That's why we have glass ball ornaments now.
