I loved my bcp. It was an old-school monophasic version. On it for 15 years. When I went off, I GAINED 10+ lbs, my cramps and pms symptoms were awful, my horrible acne returned, and my hair started thinning. I'm pregnant now and I assume I will go back on a pill after the baby is born.

@Foodnerd81: It's possible it made it worse at least. Before I went on the pill, I would have a stomach upset only a few times a year maybe (and maybe that's normal) but on the pill, I was having an 'episode' once a week or every two weeks. It was terrible. I really wish I'd put two and two together a lot sooner!! Luckily, in the last year on it, I found that eating yogurt daily helped a lot, but it still wasn't perfect.

When I first went on bcp it was great- I was getting my very heavy period every two weeks and PMSing the other week, so yeah. Bcp helped. But I started having more side effects and feeling like it was making me moody and foggy feeling, and I felt so so so much better after I went off (a good ten years later). I will not go back on it.

@Shizaz: I am wondering if the pill had something to do with my ibs! Though I guess probably not since I had stomach issues prior to ever going on it. But I've been much better since going off it- but also have been pregnant or nursing since a few months after I went off so who knows.

Is this question asking about being on the birth control pill vs. being off any type of birth control? Or being on BCP vs. a different type of birth control?

I don't notice a difference between BCP and the Mirena (besides those first 3 months). And I haven't been off birth control and not pregnant/nursing since I was 19, so...

I'm not totally sure how BCP affected my mood... I was on it from 17 till I was 29! It helped tremendously with my horrible cramps and super heavy periods. I hate not being on it now b/c my period kills, but there's no point since we plan on TTC-ing soon anyway.

I felt legit crazy on the pill. We opted to track my cycle to prevent pregnancy until our daughter was born. After she was born I got a copper iud. And now that we are two and through, DH is getting a vasectomy.

I started on the pill when i was 17 and never had many side effects. Only once did i have an issue with a different generic causing mood swings. I went off the pill when TTC 3 years ago and was only off for about 3 months before getting pregnant. At my 6 week post partum appt the dr put me on the mini pill and that was ok - hard to say if it was baby blues, stress of having a newborn or the pill. when she turned 1 my period returned and i went back on the pill i was using before TTC. it was awful i was exhausted, had no sex drive, was moody, headaches, gained weight. a couple months later at my annual I had her change my Rx it was somewhat better, I could not lose weight and i still had no sex drive. this past december I went off the pill and have been keeping track of my cycle. I feel so much better off the pill and in 3 months I dropped 10lbs.

@regberadaisy: we were in a transition period at the time, so I thought maybe it was life and it didn't click that it was the pill until I was chatting with a friend who had been depressed on the pill. It all made sense and literally within a month of being off of it, the fog lifted.

@regberadaisy: For me the mini pill just wasn't enough to work without bf too. It took them forever to figure out a dose that worked (so I'd stop bleeding every two weeks) and then I immediately got a yeast infection. That plus other side effects was enough that I'm completely done with it.

Good luck!

@lamariniere: @brownepiano: yikes. This does not make me hopeful re: the mini pill. There are already days where I wonder if I'm borderline depressed or being melodramatic?!

Well I went on originally for super heavy and irregular periods. So BCP was the best thing that ever happened to me at that point.

I felt exactly the same off BCP except for one thing- I have less headaches off of BCP (I still get some but not as much). My periods are heavier though.

I was fine on the pill--it made my periods a little lighter than they are now, but otherwise I don't feel that different. I didn't want to go back on for other reasons--I was nursing for almost 2 years and had supply issues so I didn't want to take any chance of it affecting my supply, and also I was going to be ttc again and didn't want to have it in my system

I was fine on the pill the first 10ish years I took it. However, I was on the mini pill between pregnancies and hated it. It made me depressed. I felt so much better after stopping it. Now I use the copper IUD.

I was fine on the mini pill while breastfeeding but when I stopped both the mini and regular were terrible! I tried for 6 months before giving up. I'm not sure what I'm going to do after this baby stops bf but it definitely will not be the pill.

The pill I was taking gave me IBS. I didn't make the connection until years later because I thought the IBS was brought on by the stress of being in school. Since I went off the pill, my stomach has been MUCH better.

Although I really liked being able to skip my periods and cramps were much less painful. I did feel better on the pill during my period, but I've really enjoyed not having the IBS! I probably won't go back on the pill again.

It has been well over a decade since I've been on hormonal birth control. DH and I have been together for almost 16 years! I hated how i felt on it. Irritable and generally supremely bitchy, more so than usual! :P Now that we're (most likely) done with having kids I'm going to be back on until we are ready for more permanent measures.

I'm hoping the mini pill is better, and as my OB stated, my hormones have all changed. So hopefully it won't affect me like it used to???

I've noticed a common theme in comments on birth control threads is that many people seem to have switched birth control methods at some point because they felt much better off the birth control pill. Curious how common this is... I personally haven't noticed much of a difference, but may be oblivious...
