UPDATE!! Wanted to give an update now that I'm back home from the hospital. I did end up deciding to take everything, figuring I could just leave it all in the car and only get what we wanted. And I am SO GLAD that we did. My DH was sooo glad we brought pillows and a comfy blanket bc the hospital ones sucked. And the towels there were awful, so we were both really glad I'd brought some nice towels for us (dark colored for me, although I did use their towel just to dry off my legs in case of any blood). The only thing we didn't use at all was the boppy. At first it hurt my c-section incision and i found stacking up pillows was easier for me. Even now that I'm at home I don't really use it though, I feel like it is easier for me to just pretzel up my legs and use them... so if you're a person who likes the boppy you might've been happier for it.

I personally loved having my own pillows at the hospital. I think we brought a body pillow and like 2 regular pillows. I used them during labor too. Never got any blood on them. They came in handy for nursing too. DH said this time he wants a pillow and blanket for himself. I guess the hospital didn't give him one? Or he didn't like it. I'm not really sure. I know he was a bit cold tho.

I brought my own towel and absolutely loved having it. DH was fine with the hospital towel. I don't remember my towel getting bloody. I could have used the hospital one to dry bloody areas tho. Don't remember.

I'm absolutely bringing it all again for when I have #2. Yeah it felt like a lot of stuff but DH was the one handling it all and he didn't mind. They're not necessities, but for me they were nice to have. I'm also adding my hair dryer to the list of things to bring this time. I really missed being able to blow dry my hair after my shower.

@Mae: Wow that sounds like a lot of stuff! I don't have any experience yet, but that just seems like too much to haul around! I feel like I don't even pack that much when we go on vacation for two weeks :silly:

Haha, oh my. I had two bags. One was a labor bag and the other was a rolling duffle with something like 50 items in it. I had a spreadsheet and I used nothing, lol. I was there for 4 days and we actually talked about staying another day, but on the morning of the fourth day I felt okay enough to leave.

The only thing I missed was mindless reading, like magazines to flip through, when I couldn't wind down after feedings in the middle of the night.

I don't think you'll need the body pillow or pillows in general unless you want your own. The hospital I gave birth to both of my boys at gave me as many pillows as I needed to feel comfortable. I did bring my brestfriend pillow for nursing and that helped so much! I don't remember needing much except for my own underwear (didn't like the meshy hospital ones they gave me), flip flops, and my own toiletries for the bathroom. And baby just had a going home outfit and mittens. They had a long sleeve wide neck shirt so I didn't need to bring any clothes for either of my boys. Definitely check with your hospital what they will and won't have for you during the tour if you haven't gone on it yet. Or just call and ask.

I'm not planning on bringing any of those things. A Boppy would be crucial if you had a c-section, but in my opinion not crucial for a vaginal birth.

Here's things that I am going to make sure to have this time around, in addition to normal toiletries/change of clothes:

-- Dark colored robe to wear the next day and a nursing bra or 2
-- Flip flops
-- Ipad
-- Facial cleansing wipes
-- Mittens for the baby (when DS was born he totally scratched himself up)

@Mamasig: white cotton onesies! We do plan on rooming in so she shouldn't be out of sight hardly at all. But I don't care much about what she wears the first day or two so I figured it'd be easier to just let them provide that.

@Mae: Did they show you what they put on the babies? Make sure your ok with it. Our hospital just had a paper gown for them. So I was very glad that I bought his own clothes. I don't know what your plan is, but DS only left our room twice so there was no worry about things getting lost. They did have everything else like diapers, etc.

@MrsF: Yea I have heard that about baby stuff. And they also warned us on our tour that while we CAN put our own clothes on her, they have a tendency to get lost if a nurse does a diaper change or clothing change so we're not even bothering. All I'm taking for her is 2 outfits for going home (different sizes since we don't know how big she'll be) and a cuter blanket to wrap her in for pics :)

We didn't bring pillows, blankets or towels but we packed my boppy. I looooove the blankets that come right out of the warmer!!! We were only in the hospital for 2 nights and we lived 10 minutes from the hospital so we didn't feel the need to overpack.

When we were headed to the hospital (scheduled c-section on a Saturday morning), my husband and I did comment to each other that it felt like we were just going away for the weekend!

I didn't use anything like towels or pillows or blankets. I had the boppy in the car, but never wanted it. I had like 100 pillows on my bed from the hospital, and they were more comfortable than my own!

Pretty much my only priority for the next delivery (besides baby stuff) will be my phone charger... haha.

I would skip the body pillow, blankets and towels. Your towels are going to get gross and at the hospital you can use as many as you want and won't have to worry about washing them. Leave extra things in the car and don't worry much about stuff for LO. They have pretty much anything you need in the baby department.

I skipped the boppy and used a normal pillow (which was my prefer way anyways, I never ended up using my boppy too bulky when feeding.)

Skipped the body pillow but did bring my pillow from home. DH used their pillow/blanket/and we used their towels.

@Mae: Just something to think about, things are going to get bloody. So, don't bring anything too nice. for example, you will probably ruin towels, just use the ones provided. Pillows are fine. As for cute clothes postpartum, think dark loose and comfy. You will be bleeding and don't want to ruin anything. I personally did not shower when I was at the hospital, so makeup, hairdryer, etc was unnecessary. Not sure what you are planning on bringing but those are my thoughts.

I seriously packed so much and used like nothing. I did like having my own pillow for nursing / sleeping as the hospital ones weren't great. I had a rough recovery and just stayed in the hospital gown until leaving which worked out well considering how many people needed to look at my girl parts and how often the baby was feeding. Seriously, less is more b/c that bag wasn't unpacked for 4 months.

LO is due any day and I just have comfy clothes for myself, a few outfits for baby, some toiletries and my nursing pillow packed. I have a clean tshirt, a sweatshirt, snacks, and a toothbrush/toothpaste for DH. All of that (except for the pillow) fits in a small carry on suitcase. We also live 5 min from the hospital so if DH really needs something or wants a shower he can run home. My parents are also close so that helps.

I would say yes those things were really nice to have.

I needed like two pillows under my arms plus a boppy to nurse. We used our extra pillows. I don't think we brought a blanket or towels though.

I agree we left most of this in the car until we were in recovery and it was needed.

@Mae: Ahhh, gotcha. I don't remember the towels being terrible, but I'm also not one to notice that sort of thing. I was just happy to take a shower and feel clean! Not sure how your hospital does it but at ours I labored/delivered in one then had a separate recovery room (I think this is pretty common). It would've been a pain to bring everything in then lug it to a different room, so that's why it was better for us to leave a lot of it in the car til we needed it.

@Mae: Yeah, I think the only thing I used before we got into our regular room was the flip flops. It was nice to have those on the first walk from the bed to the toilet :) (Cheap Old Navy ones, leave the good ones far away). Oh, and my phone, since I texted everyone after she was born and after our skin to skin.

And now I'm getting all teary remembering the whole thing...

@lawbee11: in case he showers? I guess people just said the hospital towels suck so much. Also I will probably labor in the shower and my midwife said he can be in there with me to help support me, so he will prob want a towel after that. Also I'm laboring (maybe birthing?) in a labor tub so I may actually use both myself. haha

@Foodnerd81: I thought about that but I don't know that I"ll need hardly anything while I'm laboring if things go well. I'm planning on unmedicated, so I don't think we'll have a ton of time to hang around killing time :) Plus all my stuff fits in one rolly suitcase so it seems easy enough to just have DH bring that up when we check in and then he can go back for the rest of the stuff later.

@fussygal: We live like 30 min away so I do feel like I don't want DH to have to run home if not necessary! I did pack a bit of real clothes, but I plan to labor in my own clothes and wear my own clothes exclusively post-labor (I just really hate hospital gowns and they don't require I wear them) so I wanted a few options in case I want/need to change a few times due to stuff getting dirty.

Wondering if maybe the best plan is to leave all the extras in the car and then just get them as-needed? I'd feel less crazy if we didn't have the whole kit n' caboodle walking in.... but I guess it would be nice to have it all in the car in case we do want some or all of it.

DH and I has a suitcase but cause wanted it in rollers. Then a bag for R, empty when we got there but filled when we left. We brought the Boppy but not pillows or towels. Next time DH will bring a pillow since he only had one and it was thin but they have blankets.
