My hospital had them full time on Starr and they came as soon as I was ready to start.

The midwives I see are also LC's. So I think that means it's already set up? I should ask for more details at next weeks appt....

I think it's a great idea to set it up ahead of time. And if you've got worries like you mentioned before, the peace of mind of it already being set up, even if you end up not needing it, is worth it imo.

I had recommendations set up before birth and ended up having her come out even though we weren't having any problems. She answered my questions an was reassuring so the confidence boost was worth it to me. I've also been able to email her with questions since then. Almost 6 months of EBF and going strong and I think she got me off to a great start!

Both- we took a breastfeeding class (yes, I made my husband go! It really helped him see how complicated it is). They have us a list of contacts to have ready soon after birth.

Our pediatrician has a LC on staff, this was one big reason we choose them. She got us scheduled to see her right away since we were having a hard time in the hospital.

I hired two after the baby was born. I don't necessarily think you need to me with one before, but I would get reocmmendations and find one that seems to be good so you have her info at the ready, as @googly-eyes: says.

I wouldn't necessarily call one but I would do a little google searching and find the number of one, and not because of the thing you talked about earlier but because of how crazy hectic and emotional the beginning can be. I didn't end up calling one because I was terribly overwhelmed and I no longer trusted the hospital ones. It's up to you though.

I'm in Canada (BC) and a LC is available as part of our health system, so I knew who I could call. I would think it would be easier to find one before, if you need her you might be feeling overwhelmed (and tired) and it would make it easier on future you :)

We have a prenatal and postnatal centre where I live that offers a variety of services such as my prenatal yoga class. Last week the lactation consultant offered a free seminar one evening. I'm so glad I went to it, I learned a lot and now I have all her info if I need her when LO arrives. Do you have anything like that where you live? Maybe a library offers an evening class?

I haven't used her yet, but my prenatal classes are co-taught by a lactation consultant, so she is available to us after the birth as well.

I am SO glad we knew of one before. We had trouble in the hospital but the lactation consultants there were really not very helpful. We called the LC from our pediatrician's office and she invited us to come over to her house immediately after being discharged from the hospital because I was kind of freaking out, and it was really helpful and sanity-restoring. Then we met with her again about four days later. I'm really, really glad we had her as a resource- I would not have wanted to look for an LC while in a panic on a Friday night as I was being discharged from the hospital.
Just because you know of one doesn't mean you have to use them, but I think it's good to have that info at the ready in case you do need it.

I saw one while we were in the hospital. I also started attending a new mom's support group while out on maternity leave, and that was run by an LC. Now that I'm back to work, I've spoken with the LC at work (I work in a hospital) a few times about pumping issues. If I remember, you work in a hospital, so maybe you could reach out to one of your LCs before-hand, and see if they'd be willing to be a consultant for you, even if you're not delivering at your hospital?

I agree with your OB it's probably a little overkill. For all you know your LO will take to nursing like a pro so there's no need to borrow trouble. I never did any sort of prep before delivery (no classes or consultations or anything). I just worked with the LCs on staff at the hospital while I was in recovery. I never saw anyone else after discharge and my daughter is now 5.5 months old and has never had anything but breast milk.

I met with the one on staff at my hospital and then the one on staff at my pediatricians office. Have you chosen a ped yet? Most if the offices in my area have a lactation consultant in office.

We met with one while pregnant for our BF class, but we saw a different one in the hospital the day after birth. She was a lifesaver. Does your hospital have LCs?

I would really like to get in contact with a lactation consultant before baby is born so that if any issues arise I already know who to call and where to go.

My OB says this is overkill and that I'll figure out breastfeeding after baby is here, and finding an LC is a bridge I don't need to cross til I have an issue. However, I don't see what it would hurt to consult with one and just have her contact info at the ready.

If you used one, what do you recommend? Before or after?

ETA: If you read my Gold thread last week, you saw that I have a
special concern about supply and being able to breastfeed in the first place.
