I have all 3 and the seat protector so far is more important to protect my leather seats from permanent indentations. I like the mirror to check in her if she's asleep or crying.

I know you don't want unnecessary stuff, but thought I'd add one to your list: LulaClips! I just learned about these recently and wished I had them sooner! They're basicallyahnrts that hold the buckles. So good when you don't want to dig buckles out from under a (hopefully) sleeping baby!

@zippylef: I think maybe this type is what a lot of people picture or are referring to (my MIL gave us one) http://www.amazon.com/Dreambaby-Deluxe-Baby-View-Mirror/dp/B002FQKB5G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371672715&sr=8-1&keywords=dreambaby+mirror

But, I should've elaborated that even using one that I think would be fine flying around in a car like the Brica one - for me personally I think it would be hazardous because I'd spend a ton of time looking up at him and not at the road. He is a noisy baby though, so I can easily tell if he is awake/asleep (or angry)!

We also use the nonlethal (enter sarcasm) mirror on the headrest which has been so nice to be able to check on her and we also use the sun shade even though the windows came tinted. We do not at this time use a seat cover.

Our mirror is soft fabric and flexible plastic, for chrissakes. It doesnt weigh enough to do any damage and it wouldn't shatter in an impact (I accidentally ran it over one time, so I know this to be true. Didn't even crack).

We have cling sunshades, the same ones as @scg00387: . I really like them.

Not ideal, could still be harmful I suppose, but better than the rollers IMO. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NA6FJ2/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

@lawbee11: Not totally related to the question you asked but also on topic...the infant car seat covers that go inside the car seat (not just over the carrier) actually affect the warranty and guarantee of the product - so make sure you pay attention when getting one of those...

the one on our registry is the one that does not effect them if you want to check it out.

we have sunshades (LO is on passenger side) and a mirror (brica, soft/not real glass obviously). both have been awesome. we also have a seat protector, and her seat is so firmly installed I'm not worried about safety for that reason -when the infant seat was installed without a seat protector (and installed BY a tech) i could slide it back and forth on the leather. but at the path of the seatbelt - where it matters most - it didn't budge. so the fact that the convertible seat can move a little doesn't freak me out, only cause i noticed that with our tech-installed infant seat base as well.

We have a car seat protector, and it did save the seats once. LO vomited (totally randomly, and well after starting solids, so it was gross) ALL over himself once in our brand new (like a month old) car. Cleaning his car seat was a horrible, horrible process that took well over an hour (not including hand-washing the cover), because there are a bunch of rivets and holes in it for liquidy stuff to spill down. I couldn't help but think that some evil plotter at Britax had cleverly designed 500 little puke channels for me to clean with a Q-tip. I was grumpy about that, but not as grumpy as I would have been if I also had puke seeping in between the seat and the backrest in my car. I guess the protector could in theory interfere with the installation, but it doesn't in our car. You can get ones that are manufacturer-approved and tested.

I never used a mirror or a shade, except the canopy shade that came with the infant seat.

The mirror is very big for us! I check back on him all the time! We also called him our little vampire as he HATED the sun. Whenever it would shine on him in the car, he would try to get away from it. So the sunshade certainly helped with that. We also have the seat protector, but honestly, I don't know that it's doing much for us. So I would say that's something you can do without.

@rattles: I did the same thing with a jumper/exersaucer. I didn't get one because our pediatrician recommended that we not use one (hip concerns, etc etc). And we finally gave in and bought one because my friends thought I was crazy to not get one. I can't believe I waited so long! It's seriously a life saver for me. haha

The mirror was crucial. The sun shade, certainly not. I'd forget that one, and just try it if you seem to have a baby who cares. I also didn't bother with the protector underneath. When I switched out my seats, the leather was pretty messy, but it cleaned easily. Maybe if you have cloth seats, you might need it more.

The mirror I have is all soft fabric, almost like a stuffed animal. I always wondered why, honestly, but I see now that this projectile stuff is a concern.

@banana: makes sense to me! I did the opposite. I didn't get one just in case, but DD would wail and wail until she spat up, and the mirror let me at least see what was going on. Once I installed it, I felt like a dope who'd been martyring myself by waiting so long.

@rattles: I didn't buy it at first either (I don't always trust the CHP. haha) but I usually sit in the back with the kids so I figured I'll just get rid of it and not take that tiny chance of anything bad happening since we didn't really need it anyway. I'm usually a worrywart too and even I wasn't 100% convinced. We probably would have kept it on if we didn't really need it anymore.

@rattles: Our CHP said it wasn't projectile concerns that was the issue. He explained that it was face to mirror impact. He went into a long detailed explanation about the way that car seats are designed to cradle around the baby when it's jerked forward/backward (like a shell) and that the mirror can cause serious damage to the face.. Some people don't buy it (like my DH!) and some people don't want to take the chance. Up to the parents I guess.

We had a mirror but got rid of if after our California Highway Patrol officer informed us that it's dangerous to have a mirror facing the baby. He said that in the event of a car accident, the baby's face can get seriously injured upon impact with the mirror. Ours was plastic but he still said it was dangerous so we got rid of it. :( We loved it when we were using it though.

We needed a shade and mirror. LO HATED the car. Screamed like a banshee at every red light for three months. Knowing that it wasn't because there was actually a problem was hugely comforting. I don't buy the mirror-as-projectile bit, depending on the kind. Ours is soft and attaches to the LATCH tether behind the headrest. If I can't trust it to hold a cloth mirror, I have bigger safety concerns about the car and LO's safety than the mirror itself.
