I flew around 21 weeks to Europe for our baby moon. DH was really nervous the whole ride and made sure I was walking around the cabin at least every 1.5-2 hours to prevent blood clots. I was nervous about those new X-ray machines but security never gave me any issues about avoiding them.

@mrskc: The FDA says they're safe, but some experts think they are so new that they're not measuring the amounts of radiation properly.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backscatter_X-ray

The other kind isn't supposed to be as controversial : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millimeter_wave_scanner

But ...

"In March 2011, it was found that some of the full body scanners in the US were emitting 10 times the normal level of radiation" -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_body_scanner

It's better safe than sorry, imo - especially when it was just my 1st tri and they couldn't tell me what type of scanner they had. But even if they could, I would have asked to be padded down anyway.

I flew long haul twice! Once right at the beginning (I think it was 6 weeks MAYBE) then at 19 to get back home. Both were over 20 hours from A to B. I had to swap seats with someone on the way back, so I could have the aisle seat though!

Flew at 14 weeks and was the lucky one in my group to be selected for the new full body scanners. I opted out and all the tsa agents rolled their eyes and sighed and echoed "OPT-OUT!" Now I hope that LO doesn't have to to through one or be patted down.

I flew a ton while I was pregnant. Baby girl literally obtained elite status in United Airlines in utero. The first time we flew was to Hawaii when I was 4 weeks pregnant. The last time was a cross country trip from California to Boston and back just before 32 weeks.

Yes I flew in my 3rd trimester. I would have preferred not to but there was a family event I didnt want to miss. It was a total of 4 flights within 2 days and I wasnt very comfortable. By the time I got back home my feet and ankles were swollen HUGE.
It was uneventful tough, I didnt go through any scanners. I just told them I was pregnant and they did a pat down down instead.

I flew from Australia to Chicago at 10 weeks and the return trip at 12 weeks - a 29 hour journey each way! I found it fine and no different from making that trip when not pregnant...except I couldn't enjoy the mini bottle of wine with dinner!

I've done a few more flights of the 2 to 3 hour variety at 23 weeks and 25 weeks. No problems with any of them. I didn't have any problems with security either - I just said I was pregnant and they let me go through the normal scanner instead of the full body scanner.

In my first trimester I flew from Maine to New Orleans and in my second trimester I flew from Maine to CA. Both times I threw up basically the entire flight, despite having taken Rx anti-nausea before the flights. So I've refused to fly since lol

I wouldn't be worried about the airport scanners. Pretty sure you get exposed to more radiation while flying than going through the scanner.

I didn't fly at all during my first pregnancy... we're not big travelers in general. But this pregnancy I have two trips planned-- one at 27 weeks (cross country) and one at 32 weeks (down to Florida). The trip to Florida is to visit friends whose wedding we missed during the first pregnancy because I was 32 weeks pregnant at the time! This time I'm just going for it because it will be our last chance in a while!!

I voted for all three. :-) I was in San Francisco in my first trimester, took a few trips in my second trimester and one trip in my third to New York. I was supposed to travel this week to Las Vegas but I canceled it after I got back from my last trip and my ankles were enormous. I also started having tightening in my belly while I was in NY and freaked out. Everything was okay but I didn't want to have to deal with that again.

I flew from DC to LA at 16 weeks. It wasn't too bad though I was still dealing with terrible morning (all day) sickness. Flying from DC to FL at 30 was much more uncomfortable. @Crumbs: They tried to force me through those too... after what seemed like an unreasonably long discussion about it, they finally agreed to a pat-down. I found that the male TSA agents were MUCH more sympathetic than the female agents... strange.
