My father (now they are divorced) guilted her into staying at home to raise his children, have dinner ready for him after work etc. He really was financially, physically and emotionally abusive to my mother (and us in turn).</p> <p>When my mother wanted to return tot he work force when we got older, it was hella hard. None of her experience was relavant anymore. She he no references etc. So she had to go back to school. </p> <p>I will not be making the same mistake. My mum worked three jobs when I was growing up - an early morning cleaning job, a dinner lady (school lunch room assistant) and an evening cleaning job. I work FT..... but at no point did I think "I want to be absent just like her". My decision to work is based on my desire to have a certain lifestyle. I chose my profession before I ever met my husband so there was no way for me to know if my husband's salary would be able to provide enough for us or not. Economy was different then. They bought their house for $150k in 1989 and it goes for $475k today. Mom was able to stay home when she wanted and work part time when she wanted. They lived on Dad's salary. She was also a teacher and I wanted nothing to do with teaching. When I was 8, she went back to school to get her masters then her PHD. </p> <p>I have a bachelors and I've been working full time ever since college. I got married much later than her and I'm currently in the position of being the family breadwinner with DH on disability. </p> <p>I'll need to keep working full time after this baby is born, but for now I'm lucky enough to work from home. However, my mom is a workaholic and put work above all else (even though she didn't have to). It definitely made me not want to make work the #1 priority in my life. I leave work at work, and my family is more important to me than anything else. Work is simply a means to an end for me.
