i read the book and i think it definitely helped when charlie was a newborn. i saw the side position in action when a nurse did it in the hospital and charlie instantly stopped crying. it was amazing! swaddling, shushing, and swinging also worked for us. but both charlie and olive were never into pacis.

1. Swaddling-hated being wrapped up from about 1.5 months on

2. Side Position-he just started sleeping like that maybe a month ago and it's been great! He now can roll over in bed and we find him more and more on his tummy. I have yet to see him roll on the floor...might have something to do with he's never on the floor?

3. Shushing-yes and no. Sometimes he looks at me like I'm being an idiot.

4. Swinging- never really liked the swing and we actually put it away. Thank goodness it was a hand-me-down!

5. Sucking-binks is his best friend...if only he would find his thumb.

They worked for the most part. LO hated to be swaddled with blankets but loved to be held close to the body in a tight embrace so I guess that's about the same.

OMG YES. Liv had colic (shoot me) and out of desparation one day I went to weddingbee and pleaded for help. EVERYONE suggested the 5 s, which I promptly said "oh no, that wont work for her, she hates the swaddle, hates the paci, etc." They all told me to at least try it, and like MAGIC it worked. EVERY FREAKING TIME. It saved my sanity. now at almost 5 months old she still sleeps swaddled, she loves it. We havent had to use it in some time (knock on wood) but that method is pure magic lol. Oh, and instead of the shushing, she liked the "Extremem Rain Pouring" noise on my iphone sound machine. I think its bc back when she was still screaming it out for 3 (!!!) hours, Id stand next to a running faucet instead of shushng as it seemed to help.

I think it definitely helped our LO when she was really upset (and under 3 months old). She preferred to suck on our fingers or arms though instead of a pacifier.

@CameronsMomma: I don't think that the side position "s" really means to sleep on the side but more to hold the baby in a cradle position on their side (almost like chest to chest).

We won't be doing the 5 S's as everything we've been told and researched has shown the baby sleeping on their side is bad and they have a harder time breathing... other than that though we will be using the other 4 as much as possible.

I had no clue it had a name! I hadn't read the book or seen the DVD, but I have tried them all with LO. Just last night she took a paci, she has just started warming up to her swing, she's always hated being swaddled, she's always slept on her side, and shushing doesn't really seem to do a damn thing lol

Yes, I got the DVD as a gift when she was 4 weeks old. I remember watching it as I was having trouble rocking my baby to sleep. I remember feeling silly copying Dr. Karp as he shushed in a baby's ear. Then I remember how ecstatic I was that she slept her longest stretch of sleep right after that... a glorious 4 hours straight! Most of all, I remember that the DVD showcased parents who were going through exactly what we were, and I remember feeling so relieved we weren't alone :)

The DVD is often my go-to gift for new parents.

I didn't even realize that what I did naturally working with babies in NICU had a "name" LOL! It works like a charm for 95% of newborns in my experience at work (even newborns withdrawing from drugs, who are the most difficult to soothe!).

We swaddled, shushed (still do!) and LO sucks her thumb (never a pacifier, she hated it). The side position only worked once in a while and she hates the swing when she's upset.

I saw the DVD, but it didn't work as well with Baby T as with other babies. He liked a combination of jiggling and me holding him swinging him side to side. He also fought the swaddle so much! Sometimes it would work to swaddle him right before nursing and he'd fall asleep. Usually I would have to feed him, change him, swaddle him as tight as possible, then stand and hold him jiggling and swinging side to side for 20ish minutes until he finally gave up. I also used to tuck a burp cloth (prefold) under the side of his head and lay it over his face. It REALLY helped when he couldn't see anything and he'd fall asleep faster.

We watch the dvd and it definately helped. We had a classic colic baby so we had to use it all. The shake the swing helped with that transition if he fell asleep on us. It was one of the few things that worked to get him to sleep.

No, we didn't. Swinging only seemed to agitate my son, he fell asleep in his swing exactly one time.

We did swaddle, I put him down on his side, he had a paci and sometimes I shush, sometimes I don't, that seems to be a crapshoot with him.

Yes! It definitely did work when she was a newborn. I think it didn't work quite so well after a few months but I remember her calming down really quickly in the beginning. I would not have known what else to do so I am glad I knew the 5 S's. :-)

We LOVED The Happiest Baby on the Block DVD, and found it pretty helpful. We didn't do all of the S's. My LO refused a pacifier, but later found her thumb and loves that. And we started swaddling her but stopped pretty early on at 2 1/2 months. But for the most part, they seemed to really work!

Did you watch the movie or read the book? And did you find these things helpful?
