@Tanjowen: that's how we approached it at first - aim for one nap but if he gets up for the day early or seems tired then go for 2, with a 30 minute limit on nap 1! That worked well until it got to the point where if he had napped in the am, he would point blank refuse to sleep again until bedtime. Good luck

We didn't force the issue, but daycare did. Once they turned a year old, they were down to just one nap a day.

@blackbird: @Bluebonnet: @Bubbles: @Smurfette: @daniellemybelle: @Mrs. Bee: @blackbird: Thanks everyone!

He slept from 6:30 pm - 6:am last night, without any wake-ups, which is a miracle for us. This morning due to scheduling again we weren't home for morning nap., but he took a 30 minute cat nap in the car. He went down for a nap 1.5 hours ago and is still out cold. I'm thinking I might herd him towards an afternoon nap, and if he *needs* a morning nap, only let him cat nap. I know 1 night isn't much of an indicator, but I'm loving this so far.

She switched to the toddler room at daycare at 14 months and transitioned to 1 nap a day then. I was VERY skeptical, but she napped 2-3 hours during that one nap, where she'd nap for 45 minutes when she was napping twice a day.

My DS is the exact same age - we actually tried out going to one nap at 10.5mo when he started fighting the am nap, but he wasn't ready, he got very overtired and started waking up at 4am. So we went back to 2 naps which was fine for a while longer. At the start of Jan his naps started getting really bad again, he would fight them both, lots of crying, waking up after only 30 mins etc. We persevered for a little while, but last week decided to bite the bullet and go to one nap. So far he's done really well - overall he gets pretty much the same amount of sleep, and he's gone back to happily going to sleep without a fight. The only thing I don't like about one nap is that if it goes wrong, that's it - no chance to recover it with the second nap!

We kind of had to. DS goes to daycare and his sleep was awful for like 6 months in the infant room. That room was just always loud and chaotic - I was in there once in the middle of the day trying to get DS to nap and babies were crying, teachers were talking at normal voices, water running in the sink (and then got plugged and ran over) teaching were coming in and out, slamming the door. It was insanity.

The daycare director said the best solution was to move him to the toddler room where they have one nap time and everyone's quiet during that time. So instead of trying to get 2 crappy naps out of him, and end up getting 1 crappy nap, he gets one decent to really good nap.

When he's at home if he's up early we do 2 naps. If he's up late, like today (8:45) we do 1 nap at 12, just like school.

Basically. She was mostly ready, but she will still fall asleep in the car if she has been up for 3 hours, even if it before naptime or she already had her nap. So I think we could still do 2 naps, but bedtime was getting later & later. Now she is READY for bed by 7:30 and sleeps better at night.

we pushed charlie at 15 months. he got more sleep on one nap anyway since we woke him up from his two naps so bedtime wouldn't be too late (but he was a great napper).

we tried to push olive at 15 months, but she couldn't do it. she dropped her nap at 17 months since she started daycare, though she probably would have held onto it longer if she were home.

if they are getting more total hours of sleep, it's worth a shot. if it doesn't work out -- like it didn't with olive -- you can always go back to 2 naps.

@Tanjowen: she was skipping her afternoon nap son often by that point that I just gave up on it. I never wanted to cut a morning nap short since there was no guarantee of an afternoon one anyway.

I didn't, but that's because she was pretty happy with two naps until recently. I think we switched to 1 nap right around 18 months old.

Now that we're on 1 nap, her night sleep is still hit or miss, so it didn't solve any issues there.

Lo1 started doing one nap at around 13 months. She used to be a chronic cat napper and once we moved to one nap, she lengthened her naps out to 2 hours. It was great!

At 12 months DS was forced to one nap when he started daycare. It took a few weeks for him to adjust and weekends during that phase he still had two naps. But once he adjusted he started napping better than he ever had.

@Ocean girl: That's exactly what he did today! I had several friends tell me that if he was in daycare he'd be on one nap now.

@NurseDMB: I didn't think about it making his night sleep worse. :bummed: I was just hoping that if he wouldn't be so exhausted during the day from not napping well he might sleep better at night, but who knows with babies!?

@loveisstrange: Hmmm, interesting. He doesn't so much fight the afternoon nap so much as he just isn't tired until 3:30-4p.m., and since he goes to bed at 7, that seems too late to nap. Maybe it's his way of saying he's ready.

@Foodnerd81: 2-3 hours consistently would be awesome. When you pushed back the morning nap, did you shorten it so LO would sleep that afternoon, or just shorten the afternoon nap for bedtime purposes? Hope that makes sense.

I resisted one nap for weeks after she was giving me signs that she was ready. She would take a great morning nap but frequently refuse the afternoon nap even though she was clearly tired, so she would end up being awake from 11-7, which was way too long for her (or me). So I gradually pushed the morning nap later and later and gave up on the afternoon nap. For a while it was wonderful and she would sleep for 2-3 hours, but lately now her one nap is often under an hour and a half. She seems fine, actually, but mama needs a longer break than that! She went to one nap around 14 months, is 18 months now.

We switched to 1 nap at 12 months because she was fighting her afternoon one like crazy. It was painless. She was obviously ready.

I probably wouldn't force it because it may make his sleep even worse. Transitioning to 1 nap can be really hard and a long process.

My son started transitioning himself around 11 months, but even with 1 nap it wasn't very long - it took him awhile to adjust.

Now he's 18 months and takes one 3 hour nap everyday.

DD started daycare at 12 months - they only do one nap per day where she goes, so I gradually transitioned her in the 2 weeks leading up to when she started. Her schedule very quickly adjusted and she regularly naps 2+ hrs from 12-2 now.

My 13.5 month old has been having a rough past 2 months. We have had non-stop teething, and an ear infection and sleep regression issues. We are finally starting to have nights of only 1 wake-up and him sleeping until 6:30 a.m., but naps have been crap. He has only given me 30-45 minutes twice a day this week, and one day he took 3 cat naps! Before this, he was on 2 naps a day (1.5-2 hrs each).

Today, we weren't able to be home for morning nap and he powered through until noon, and since then has been asleep and going on 2+ hours now...heaven. I am wondering if I should start forcing him into one nap and put him to bed early to see if it helps him sleep/nap better? Our pediatrician said around 14 months he might start going to 1 nap anyways, but I don't want to force something he isn't ready for yet.

If anyone forced the issue, I'm curious how it worked for you.
