You know how newborns only see the colors - black, white and red? The Linea Negra was designed as a "runway"/guiding line for the newborn. My OB told me it was because when the skin is stretched over the bump, it makes it more fair. After the baby is out, it, like, condenses and looks darker. He compared it to drawing a thin line on a rubber band with a pen. When you stretch the rubber band, it looks thinner and lighter, then when you unstretch it, it gets thicker and darker again.
