They gave me fentanyl before my epidural and I was soooo relaxed. My nurse was so amazing. I told them I was worried about it and they hotpacked my arm first, which worked awesomely. I kept telling them that I could feel it, and it was awful. I've never had one before, and I don't look forward to ever having one again. The nurse jabbed me and blood spurted everywhere! It wasn't a big deal except it scared DH so much!! I had a stupid IV on for 3 days and wasn't allowed to shower post c-section bc I couldn't pee enough. Finally I lied and used my peri bottle and filled catch bin so they'd let me shower. I passed out during my IV lock insertion and just felt crappy for the rest of labor [as if I felt 100% awesome before that point]. I had to have antibiotics in early labor because I was group B strep positive. She gave me the option of getting the numbing shot and I said yes because I had only ever had one other IV and wasn't sure what the pain would be like. I couldn't feel it go in at all! I can't even decide which place I hate it the most. I hate the inside of the elbow and I hate the back of the hand. My last delivery they put it on the side of my wrist and that was a little better because they could wrap the entire wrist and make it not move at ALL and I couldn't see it at all. Still hated it though. But I had one once for dehydration and they didn't numb me. Oh plus my egg retrieval. I don't think they numbed me before that IV either. All were in the hand. They were able to take blood from that one, but then they had to give me one in the other hand for the fluids without the numbing shot. Does the numbing shot before the epidural count? They did that both times for me. For me the urinary and IV catheters are literally the worst part of L&D, I hate how they feel! IVs make me want to wither so I was amazed at how great it went with the shot. They told me they can't do it on the L&D wing because there's no anesthesiologist to sign off on each one . To me that is a big bummer because even with an epidural you are somewhat active and I hated knocking the IV into something or, worse yet , when the automatic heart rate thing squeezed it. Pure misery! Now that I know the joy of a numbing shot I'll never be able to endure a regular IV again!
