I really hated my LC with DD. she was so matter of fact and unsympathetic I can't believe I was out $85 after that. However when I had DS I did remember some things she said like needing to take a nursing "vacation" if my supply was low. At the time I thought she was talking crazy but three years later it made more sense...

Yes! My daughter was quite distressed from my induction, and was in the nicu for week, during which time she was unwilling to latch and nurse. I saw several LC's in the nicu who set me up with a good pumping schedule and showed me various ways to try to get her latched. They were amazing, and due to them I was able to get my supply started and quickly get her latched perfectly and stop the bottles all together.

Yes! I went to a breastfeeding group 3x a week after LO was born. I picked up a lot of great info but the one thing that has stuck with me is when LO gets fussy a few minutes in it usually means they have some gas! I had no idea!

Yes, I saw 2 LCs in the hospital before we were discharged. The first one told me he looked jaundiced and got me a pump for colostrum in case anyone wanted to supplement with formula. She finally got him to latch and eat. The second assured me that I was nursing "right" and it's okay to be sore because I'd never done it before. They both made me feel very confident.

Later I called an LC because my son was fussy at the breast & spitting up constantly. She gave me advice to help with an oversupply & fast let down. I saw her again in a support group and she told us "nursing works best when you're not thinking too hard about it." My experience with them (and my hospital) has been great!

No, the LC in the hospital told me how to supplement with formula and the LC out of the hospital, basically said, "I don't know, you should see speech pathology."

I've gotten better advice here! (And we're still BF'ing!)

Yes: just keep trying. It took us three weeks to figure out breastfeeding due to tongue tie, high arch palate and short nipples. But we eventually got it!

One good tip was to help the baby get their tongue to stick out (which A wasn't doing at first) by doing exercises with a binky or tiny cup. It really helped to strengthen his suck I think.

It's procedure here after you are discharged to have a 2 day well visit at the materneal newborn clinic and meet with an LC. Thanks to HB she didn't tell me anything I didn't already know but she did tell me to feed LO every 2 hours until she reached her birth weight.... which was garbage. Ugh. I was so stressed trying to wake her ever 2 hours. When I stopped doing that I was sailing.

Yes! My LC (the one that came to my home . . . the one in the hospital was awful!) made continuing BFing possible for me! I will be forever grateful! She helped me with LO's latch, getting my nipples to heal, thrush, you name it!

Yes! I loved my LC!

I learned that you can put some lanolin on before pumping to help with any friction if you are really sore.

My LO was throwing up a lot after nursing for short periods so I contacted a LC. I told her I was nursing for all feedings and pumping 7-9 times a day to build a stash. She told me I was pumping too much and I was making my baby unhappy with a super fast letdown. My baby in the present should be my top priority...not a freezer stash.

I took her advice and things are going really well. I'm pumping 3 times a day and still freezing plenty but my flow is more manageable for my baby. She is able to nurse for 20-30 minutes instead of 2-3 minutes and I haven't had any vomit messes to clean!
