No cervical checks until I specifically requested them because I was debating on getting an epidural 26 hours into labor.

@2PeasinaPod: @AstroBee: Same. My midwives didn't do cervical checks until labor. My first, last, and only check was at 8 cm dilated. It was go time after that.

No, and I would have declined unless there was some sort of extenuating circumstance (like early labor). Why risk the infection?

With E, I never had a cervical check until I got to the hospital and was 10cm. Haha!

With A, I let my doc check at 36 weeks (I had changed practices) because we were going out of town. I was 1.5cm dilated at that point. Got checked again at 39 weeks and was almost 4cm. Still went to 40+3! Makes for a fast labor, though. :P

@Astro Bee: This!

With my first, my OB asked if I'd like to be checked at 36 weeks and I declined due to my BFF's story. She was checked at 36 weeks and was 3cm. She got her hopes up that it would be soon, and went past her due date and was beyond done. I didn't have any until I was 39 weeks. I was completely closed and gave birth 2 days later.

With LO2, I declined all checks because he was a scheduled C-section. So no need!

With no history of pre-term labor, my practice doesn't do them until 38 weeks now. However, I asked for one at 36 weeks with LO2 because I was already feeling prodromal labor contractions--I was 1 cm dilated. At 37 weeks, I was 3 cm dilated and went into labor 2 days later, almost 3 weeks early. So I was glad I asked so I could get mentally prepared.

Only ever when I was concerned about threatened miscarriage! Otherwise my OB doesn't check until a patient is post-dates and he is trying to ascertain how favorable they are for spontaneous labor or different induction strategies.

I had cervical checks done starting at 36 weeks. My midwife always asked each time though if I wanted it done. I was curious, and always did! I was 4 cm dilated at my 39 week appt, and then finally delivered at 39+6!

My OB's policy is not to do any cervical checks until you present with labour symptoms. This is because there isn't any strong correlation between initial dilation and onset of active labour; you can be 2 cm dilated for weeks but not go into labour, or fully closed and give birth 12 hrs later (like myself - had been having contractions for a couple of hrs 2 mins apart and was 0.5 cm when first checked, and had the baby 9-10 hrs after that).

I never had any with either pregnancy. I think my midwives probably might have started at 40 weeks if I had a) wanted and b) made it that far but I had c sections at 39 weeks both times.

No, not before 37 weeks. Except for specific situations (preterm labor etc), I don't even know why it would be offered before then. Risk of infection etc increases.

My second OB asked at 37 and I did because I was going out of town and wanted to know if there would be an issue. I didn't get a check until active labor at the hospital after that.

Yes, I had one at 34 weeks the first time to be sure my frequent Braxton hicks weren't actually real contractions and causing me to dilate. I had one at 18 weeks this time because of how much pressure I've been feeling.

I was 1 cm dilated at 30 weeks with my DD and put on bed rest. I was checked pretty regularly after that. I ended up making it to 37 weeks though so I don't think the weekly checks made anything progress more than it already was.
