I work for a non-profit, and we are given 8 weeks of leave, with the option for an additional 4 weeks at the discretion of the director. What do you think? She said "Again, if all goes well, it’s typically 6 weeks disability for delivering a baby, even if it’s a c-section." and I asked who determined that and she said "Yes, the Dr. determines the amount of time off – 6 weeks is just the standard for a baby. If there are complications, your Dr. could determine that you need more time off." Seems so vague to me! I am taking more time than that, but that is what is paid through my company's STD.</p> <p>Almost all companies pay maternity leave through short-term disability policies they have with an insurance company. I would ask your HR person to have a conference call with you and the insurance rep to confirm the exact details. I'm taking the max under FMLA (12 weeks) and can use accrued sick and vacation time to pay for it. Sick leave is only allowed to be used until the doctor clears me as physically able to return to work, which usually happens at 6-7 weeks after a vaginal birth or 8-10 weeks after a c-section. There's no reason to assume as of now my delivery will be anything but normal, but I'm of course looking into all options. I always assumed that I would get 6 weeks maternity leave for a vaginal delivery or 8 weeks for a c-section. That was the one silver lining I saw about having a c-section (I've never had surgery so it scares me a bit.) When I talked to my HR rep about my maternity leave, she said that I will get 6 weeks for vaginal and "most c-sections." It sounds like I get pretty much 6 weeks no matter what :( What was your maternity leave policy like- was it clear cut for vaginal vs c-section? Did it depend on what your doctor "ordered" for your leave? </p>
