@looch: Oh yeah, I can totally see that! Since my DD1 is young I guess we were ultimately looking for a convertible looking seat still! But man I really do love Britax... Those seats are no joke! We have a Boulevard in my mom's car and those things are beasts.

@snowjewelz: I have the Graco Nautilus in my car, it's a great seat. The only reason why I didn't get a second one was that when we bought it, the model had a thick base compared to the Frontier, and we needed the extra inches in the back seat of my husband's sedan.

I agree, it's important to look at the seats in person, you see things differently than you do online.

@looch: @catgirl: @Miss Ariel: We ended up getting the Graco Nautilus over the weekend! We had a Babies r us giftcard that I had saved for this occasion and they had the 65 XL in one color on sale so we went for it. It's so important to to physically look at the seats like we did when we got DD1's Chicco Nextfit.

@snowjewelz: they are both great seats. The tranzitions/ways is much narrower. So better if you ever anticipate needing 3 across (though your nextfit would likely not work in a 3 across). I've read a lot that the nautilus can create more head slump when kids try to sleep in the car. The tranzitions can be a little more challenging to install but not crazy so. I do think the tranzitions has a few more rules in booster mode, such as no overhang. I don't think you can go wrong with either seat though. You could also look at the harmony defender. From what you've said I don't think your DD needs the higher limits of the britax seats.

@looch: Oh I absolutely want to harness for as long as possible! I think the bucket worked well for us because I had two winter babies so it was good to keep them in a seat not have to come out when it's cold.

I think we're gonna get DD1 a forward facing harness seat that can later turn into a booster. She isn't a big kid, so she might just be able to use it the whole way through.

@snowjewelz: In retrospect, if money didn't matter, I would have gotten all Peg Peregos, because that's my favourite one - it just seems to have the best combination of comfortable for the kids and ease of buckling (my problem with the fllo is that the strap between the legs is really short and the padding around it is really wide, and I feel like it forces my baby's legs far apart and I'm always worried I'm going to pinch his thighs). That being said, they're all basically fine.

We passed down the NextFit to DD, because we had to turn the seat forward facing when DD was born.

We have only had two car seats, 1 convertible - used from birth until turning forward facing, and 1 combination.

@looch: this is such a good idea and so obvious but one I haven't thought of yet. Since dd is forward facing, and Ds will be moving out of his infant seat soon, it makes total sense for us, but I don't think I would have ever considered it till you put it out there. Thank you!

We also hand the seats down to the baby and get the next seat for the big kid. Mine are 2.5 years apart as well. So we ended up turning the next for FF when we brought the baby home from the hospital in the infant seat. (Couldn't for two RF seats comfortably). Then when the baby outgrew the infant seat we gave her the next fit (turned back to RF) and got a Frontier combination seat for the then 3.5 yo.

I will say she doesn't really sleep in it, which is generally fine but I think it wouldn't be as comfortably for car sleeping as the next fit. And sometimes she whines that she wants to go in the baby car seat. It's easier for her to climb in to though.

We just got a second clek Fllo for LO2. Mostly it's because we dont own a car and the car we use most often is pre latch and they are almost the only thing I could safely and easily install.. LO2 is SO HAPPY

@snowjewelz: So have you decided yet? I think there's something to be said for trying to minimize the car seats you buy...if I had to do it all over again, I would have skipped the bucket and just used a convertible rear facing, then when the seat was outgrown forward facing, gone to a combination seat. I think the combination seat is great for parents that want to harness a bit longer. I know a ton of people that have their 4 year olds in belted boosters, but my son isn't mature enough at age 6 for that kind of seat yet, so he's harnessed.

We have a nextfit zip for LO. For number 2 initially I thought about passing it on and getting a harness to booster for LO1. However she has some car sick issues so whatever we replace it with needs to be easy to clean.
I love the zip for that. The number of times I've had to take that thing apart and clean it...ugh. But the zip makes it more bearable. So I might get a second one. I only wish they were more narrow like clek

I will be buying another for DH's car when she needs a new one in his car or LO2 moves to a convertible, which ever is first. If LO1 is FF I would buy her a seat (harness to booster) like this and pass on the convertible that can RF to LO2.

@snowjewelz: since she is forward facing it definitely makes the most sense to pass her seat down and buy her a combination seat.

Many convertible seats have high limits that can get kids to booster age, then you would just need to buy an inexpensive booster. For many people it is the most cost effective option. But in your case it wouldn't make sense to have two convertible seats when one would be used forward facing.

We used the same infant one for both and they now both have the same brand (Britax) but different seats. My son is in the Frontier (he's almost 5) and when we are ready to move DD up to a bigger seat we will probably go with one of the narrower seats to save space. If I had it to do again I would've bought him something more narrow.

@snowjewelz: a convertible seat is rear and forward facing. A multi mode seat is rear facing, forward facing, and turns into a booster. A combination seat is a forward facing harness that turns into a booster.

There are only a handful of multi mode seats that actually work well in all modes. For most people it makes the most sense to get a convertible seat and then a booster. But if you are passing seats down it can make more sense to pass the convertible down and get a combination seat for the older LO.

Also some combination seats have much higher harness limits then any convertible seats. So some kids need them after outgrowing the convertible.
