@winniebee: Lego Juniors are the same as the size as the small regular Legos. Just less pieces. Simple things to build. And the best part is most instructions are pictures (no reading required) and very easy.

@winniebee: If it were me and G was my toddler I'd be OK since she never puts things in her mouth!
Of course I think like you stated I would tell T some.guide lines and keep them away from R and safley stored!

We started with Juniors when he turned 4, and it has grown exponentially over the past 4 months :P We've been adding regulars to the Juniors since they all just fit together.

My youngest just turned 2 and doesn't put them in his mouth, but he LOVES to pull everything apart, leaving big bro in distress. We have them relegated to a corner of the living room in an area that's not as attractive to little bro (a high table).

Cam's speech therapy recommended these to help him follow written and verbal directions, so Lego time is during naps to reduce the destruction. He loves it so much he will push E into his room, turn off the light, close the door, and say, "nap time!" It's actually a time I really enjoy spending with him and not really something my husband has the patience for so he and I usually pick out a small vehicle every week or two and build on a day when he could use a little motivation.

BTW, we are moving into a house with a playroom and I think our policy will be that all toys are in the playroom except the legos.

My evil ILs got my 3.5 year old the little legos for Christmas and so we are stuck with them. Right now he plays with either happily, but he wouldn't take kindly to me getting rid of the small ones. Our rule is that he has to play with them on a surface, or in his room. If I find them on the floor, I put them in an old jelly jar until the jar is filled up and he can have them back. Or I sweep them up and throw them away-- after all it wasn't ME who bought them so wtf do I care if they all magically disappear? Haha, but really it is a motivator for him to keep them up.

@winniebee: They're actually the same size, pretty much, there's just less pieces. We have literally every freaking set of both that's under 300 pieces and they are everywhere. I'd be terrified of having a younger child that's still putting things in their mouth around unless I was super diligent. Heck, DS just turned 4 and I still catch him putting pieces in his mouth. It's like they appear to be the most delicious thing on the planet to anyone under the age of 5. But maybe have just one set of juniors with a low count or do a small box of the classic (non set) pieces and see how it goes?

@Mrsbells: I really meant Lego juniors. Those are a little bigger than real Legos but nowhere near as big as duplos, so still a choking hazard for little bro

@winniebee: We did buy real Legos but we keep them in the basement where DD2 isn't allowed to play. I'm not sure where we will keep them when we move.

There's just no way we could right now - I constantly find DD2 chewing/sucking things she shouldn't be, no matter how careful we are. DD1 hasn't seen Legos yet (she has Duplos), so we should be safe for now! If she does ask, I'd do what you're doing - sealed container, stored up high, and only with adult supervision or when little sibling is asleep. Maybe even use one of those drawstring mats so you don't risk pieces getting left out.

I am on the fence about thus right now ... I am hoping we can wait a little longer on the Lego for DS because DD is into everything!

We have the regular ones and we just try to keep a close eye on the LOs when they use them during playtime! I Put them away in my office at night.

We've started buying LO1 real legos, and she's 3.5. LO2 arrives in 4 weeks. I've already been coaching her on the rules with where she can play with legos and what we have to do to keep baby sister safe. :) Right now, she's taking it all very seriously.

We did. DS was introduced to real Legos a few months before he turned 4 and DD was almost 1. We always supervised very closely when she was around them and we've never had an incident. We keep them out in the living room and my younger LO mostly ignores them. Now, when we have younger children come over, we move the Lego table to my son's room and the younger children stay in the living room.

Would you get your 4 year old regular legos or lego juniors (I'm not talking duplos) if they had a younger sibling? T will be 4 and really wants lego juniors. He plays with duplos all the time and has been asking for "real legos."

His younger brother will be 17m when he turns 4 next month and I'm thinking he can have them, but has to keep them in a separate space (a closed tupperware in his bedroom). DS2 isn't all that into putting things in his mouth anymore, but obviously it's still a choking risk.
