I worry about this and will be asking my allergy/immunologist after we conceive. My husband is super allergic to peanuts, he is one of the people who has an anaphylactic reaction even to airborne particles so we are constantly on edge about it. I am so worried we will have a child with a similar or worse allergy.

@Mrs. Jacks: I can't wait to read your post! I would love any info about prevention if you have any too! I feel like everything I can find is about introducing allergenic foods earlier rather then later but that it doesn't apply if you think they will have an allergy.

Around 15 months, she got tested after getting hives around her mouth, it was peanut allergy. She got tested again at age 5 for environmental allergies like cat dander and tested positive for ragweed, that type of thing. Which is probably the cause of her chronic sinusitis. For DS, he got tested for peanuts and treenuts at age 1 due to peanut allergy in the family (and he was negative for those).

6 months after breathing issues at my friends house (who has a dog). They tested environmental and food. Turns out it was eggs and not the dog that he was allergic to.

Yes, due to her stomach issues, we had her tested around 8 months I believe. She had the prick test, and then followed up with blood for a couple of hte "bad ones." and now next month we are doing a trial in office to see what kind of reaction she has (to nuts.)

Never had her tested but we did cut out dairy and soy when she was 2 months old based on symptoms. She's never had an allergic reaction though, just 'intolerance' reactions.

18 months old after I insisted. We only did the few things we had concerns about and one out of each family. This was a scratch test.

Yes...just before he hit 12 months. He had an allergic reaction to me giving him a piece of scrambled egg (lots of hives and itchiness around the face), so we took him to an allergist.

He only tested for 2 things: egg whites and peanuts since peanuts are so common. Did a scratch test for those two, then blood work for the egg whites since that came up as a positive on the scratch test. The peanuts came up negative.

Blood test showed that he's definitely allergic to egg whites. We'll repeat twice a year until he grows out of it!

@autumnlove: You can only hope that he did! Our nut issue came to light similarly. She would get rashy when I'd open a bag of cashews and so I knew there must have been something pretty severe going on!

@Mrs. Jacks: My LO is still EBF but she gets rashy and has the runs after I consume nuts..not sure if I should be concerned? I hope my DH asked the Dr. about it today! :)

At 2, allergic to tree nuts and peanuts. At 3, tested again and is now only allergic to peanuts apparently, but I haven't given her any nuts. We also tested for shellfish at 3 and she was fine.

She got scratched by a cat this weekend and didn't puff up - not allergic to cats! Woo! (haaaa...sorry). No, we haven't done anything formal yet.

@autumnlove: Our LO was tested at 7 months in response to an allergic reaction he had to eggs. Otherwise we wouldn't have had him tested. But I have to say, he didn't even notice the scratch testing at all!

Yes for #1, she was developing hives and lip swelling at 8 months, so we had to figure it out.

No for #2, she hasn't had any problems.

There is a blog post in the works about this, I promise!

The Choosing Wisely campaign would discourage testing unless a child is symptomatic.
