My dentist's push is that the surgery is a lot easier on a younger person &amp; if they were to become infected when older it's a lot harder to heal. Then I got a cavity in one and try said I should just do it now, but that it would be harder since I was over 30! </p> <p>I had all 4 removed at once. It sucked for a few days but I took the hard core pain killers at night and Advil during the day, plus lots of time with the ice pack. In January of this year. Two of them had finally started to poke through and my dentist recommended going ahead and extracting all 4 even though they didn't hurt. He told me it should heal quickly and be pretty painless since 2 of them hadn't even poked through. Also my insurance should pay for almost all of the procedure. </p> <p>Well it took me 3 full weeks to be able to eat normally again and to recover. I was in so much pain. My insurance had also only covered 40%. I got screwed. Everyone told me I'd be fine in a couple of days and it took almost a month to get better. The first one was an emergency extraction after it got infected...and left me with a locked jaw (the infection, not the extraction) while I was in the middle of doing my master's. That was super fun. I should have done it earlier--the nurse said my nerve endings "were as curly as my hair" and I have VERY curly hair! And then I had horrible, horrible dry sockets and it was a rough recovery. More than 6 years later, I still actually have a tingly feeling on my chin when I touch it in a certain place, my nerve endingss definitely got f*ed up! My dentist is not happy about it either! I was supposed to get them out like, 8 years ago and just...never did. I have all 4. 2 are all the way in, the other two are about halfway through. I really don't have any issues with them, I have to pay pretty close attention to making sure no food or anything gets stuck under the "gum flap" of the ones that are halfway through, but that's about it.
