I got suckered into going to one sorority party (I was invited and went for the beer, not realizing what it was) and they pulled all the girls in groups of 4 into a separate room to ask deep questions like, "Tell us something you've done that you were ashamed of", "What's the worst thing someone ever did to you?", etc to "bring us all closer together and help us bond". Then we got tips on drinking carrot juice to help tan evenly and daytime makeup. True story. I couldn't even keep a straight face. It was right out of a bad movie. Just...not my style. The greek system wasn't super prevalent at my school, which was pretty artsy for a state school. I was a Sigma Kappa at a large state school. It was great. My DH was in a frat too. We are both super close with our friends from the frat/sorority (bonus that many are mutual friends). There are at least 3 owls staring at me right now. It's a bit of an obsession. I've been banned by DH from acquiring more. He thinks if we try to sell our house or have random company over that they will think we are nuts. I went to a large state school with a huge Greek system and knew I wanted to rush before I ever set foot on campus! It was fun for the four years but once I graduated, I pretty much closed the book on that chapter (pardon the pun) of my life. I still keep in touch with some of the girls but don't participate in any alumni activities or anything like that. Greek life was surprisingly huge at my school--it's a small liberal arts school, so I had no idea how big greek life was until I was immersed into it but a TON of people are Greek--I would say like half of the student body, or at least it seemed that way. They have a very big presence on campus. I considered rushing a few times, but decided against it--I'm not super-social, didn't like that it was such a big financial commitment, and I already had a great solid group of college friends so I didn't need to join it to have the social outlet. My sister who went to the same college as me, however, is an extrovert and social butterfly and did go Greek, but there was a ton of drama in her sorority and she actually ended up dropping her letters!
