I was very fortunate. My parents took us to places like Disneyland, Disney World, San Francisco, Hawaii, Palm Springs, and we went to the Oregon Coast a lot. We went to Vegas a few times for dance competitions and turned them into vacations. My grandparents also took us to Europe quite a few times, and we rafted the Grand Canyon with one set of grandparents. My parents are not big on camping at all. But we did lots of driving across France, Germany etc. and once a year we got to pick a destination we wanted to visit. We spent the whole year earning about it and then in summer took a 3 week trip there. Taiwan, HK, Singapore, Malaysia areas because my aunts were travel agents! This was when I was under the age of 4. I have an entire passport filled with stamps. I have vague, but warm memories of those days. I especially remember the plane rides and how nice the stewardesses were! </p> <p>Then as I grew older, we just did more local family trips like Big Bear, Mammoth, and Vegas! We went to Vegas every year for awhile. There were special trips too, like Maui one year and a cruise to Puerto Vallarta another.</p> <p>DH and I recently mapped out a plan for family vacations for the next five years. We were really lucky in that my mom traveled a lot for work, so our hotels were often paid for, and our flights were usually covered by frequent flier miles. We often traveled with her when she had to travel for work. Otherwise there's no way we could have afforded a lot of the vacations we took. I was lucky to grow up in a place where 4-6 hours of driving would take you to any number of national parks! Once my dad was more established in his career we started to go on a spring break trip every year, starting when I was 11 or so. Now that I think about it, maybe they were just waiting until the kids were old enough to better handle traveling. The first trip we went to Disney World, we also went to Hawaii once, Washington DC, San Diego....</p> <p>And every summer we went to visit my grandparents--3 weeks in rural Wisconsin with my mom's side, 3 weeks in northern Minnesota with my dad's side. One of my favorite childhood memories is when my dad drove out to meet us in Minnesota, and I got to drive back with him by myself! We drove through the badlands of South Dakota, saw Mt. Rushmore, did all the quirky things you do on a long road trip like that. Trips to amusement parks were scattered in here and there. My dad is the most hassle-averse person I've ever met, so vacations had to be as easy! We weren't jet setters, but I certainly wasn't a stranger to plane rides and long car rides. We typically went on a week long vacation and then had a few overnight or long weekend trips through out the year. We had a few big trips over the years -- Hawaii to celebrate the year one of us was graduating from grad school, college and high school and my parent's anniversary. We tagged along one year on a business trip of my dad's to California. We didn't do the beach those years though. I love the idea of going back to the same place every summer (DH grew up doing the same) but I hope to have my kids see a bit more of the country/world than I did. I grew up very much below the poverty line. We lived in a trailer park in costa mesa till I was 12 then moved up to Washington state where we put a 1 BR trailer home on 5 acres of land. My sister and I shared the bedroom and my parents slept in the living room. When we turned 16 and 17 they got us our own little trailer which was nice because we had a bit more privacy but it was teeny. My grandma did fly us out to see her in NYC once when we were 8 and 9 and then at 15 and 16 which is why we both decided to move there after high school. We drove around california and northern and eastern washington for some of my dads gigs too which was cool and we crossed the boarders to Mexico when in CA and to British Columbia when in WA. I wouldn't call them vacations though. More like life experiences/ordeals.
