In NY there are mostly middle schools and I'm actually a teacher in one too.

For me, middle school isn't about the grade range, but instead it is an educational philosophy. Middle schools usually have a team structure so there is more support and consistency in a student's day. A team (at least in our school) has common goals and regular meetings to support and care for kids). A junior high is structured more like a high school with more independence for students.

We only have middle schools here, but the high schools just started separating out the 9th graders entering high school into a separate building. I'm guessing it's to ease the transition process.

We only have middle schools here. We have two campuses that are just 6th grade this year and I think it is fabulous. I hate the 6th grade transition to middle school because they get exposed to too many things that they shouldn't from the older kids.

Most schools here followed the typical Canadian P-6 (I'm Nova Scotia, so it's Primary not Kindergarten) until the last ten years or so.

With aging populations in some districts, and huge growth in others, the school boards have had to adjust their popuations to fill some buildings and relieve the stress in others. So now, we see SO many different combinations, althoough we typically still call it Junior Might regardless of it's makeup, although there are exceptions.
Elementary: p-6 p-4 and p-5 can all be seen!
Junior high: 7-9 7-8 6-9 6-8
High:10-12 9-12

Several places have Elementarys that go to 8 or 9 and even 12!
Some High schools start at 7 or 8

It's all about the demographics.

This is how it's laid out here:
Elementary: K-4
Intermediate: 5-6
Junior High: 7-9
High: 10-12

Used to be 5 was elementary and 9th grade had it's own campus, but they changed it all around.

@jennylayneaz: My husband and I have worked in Roosevelt, Glendale, and Peoria (largest district in Phoenix I hear). All three districts have the k-8 system, and I believe most of the surrounding suburban districts and charters do.

@DesertDreams88: I'm curious as to what school district you're in :) I'm in the Mesa District and went to Gilbert Schools and they are/were K-6, 7&8, 9-12(as far as I know they're still that way in Gilbert). I know Chandler and QC have different set ups than that though. and I don't know about Tempe, Phx, Scottsdale, etc.

@mrbee: Here we have;
Elementary: K-8
Secondary (High school): 9-12
That's the way most schools are here (Ontario).
My kids will attend the same system. K-8 then 9-12.

@Rubies: Wow so 8th graders are at the same school as kindergarteners!! That's so outside of my experience, I'm having a hard time imagining it! But I bet it's way less stressful for 7th and 8th graders to stay in the same school, versus transitioning to something totally new.

I went to a school system with Jr. High - which is 7-9. I never heard of junior high before that I was only 7 and 8. High school was 10-12, elementary was k-6.

In the school system we live in now he'll go to middle school (6-8). Around here that seems to be the norm. My old school went through a lot of changes and did a lot of experimenting - at one point they had a school for just K, then a school for just 6th grade, now a school for just 9th grade I think. So you do k-6, middle school (6-8), 9th grade, then HS (10-12).

I don't really like the concept of middle school over having junior high. I think 6th grade is really young to be putting kids in schools with older kids, and with the responsibility of getting to class, navigating when to use a locker, etc. I also wonder if it contributes to so much sexual behavior at a young age today.

we just have primary school - prep to grade 6, and then high school 7-12.

I went to an elementary school, K-8, and then on to high school (this was in the US).

In England, it is totally different and my girls will go to school as follows:

- Infant school for nursery from age 3 through Year 2 (equivalent of 1st grade in the US)

- Junior school for Years 3-6 (2nd to 5th grade equivalent)

- Secondary school for Years 7-11 (or 12, can't remember exactly)

- Sixth form at the same secondary school - this is not compulsory but is a precursor to university for two years, usually ages 16-18

My school was K-7 and 8-12. The county was too small for a middle school! Though we called the side of the school that had the 6th and 7th grade classrooms "middle school." But it wasn't really separate at all.

I actually really liked it. It seems like middle school is an awkward awful time for most people, and to separate out those pre-teen ages and put them in a pressure cooker seems like hell! It was just kind of nice to be treated like a kid when you still were, but given a little more freedom. 8th grade was still pretty young to go to HS, but they tried to keep all of the classes and activities separate.

I went to a k-8 and there are still some k-8s in our neighborhood. I actually hope that the schools in our neighborhood stay k-8 so I could send ds there. I currently teach middle school 6-8 and see a huge difference in the behavior of the kids who go to middle school vs those who go to a k-8. We have some schools in the district where I teach that are 6-12 (now this I'm definitely against BC i don't need my future 11-12 year old around high school seniors)

Here in AZ, it's mostly K-8 then 9-12, or k-3, 4-8, and 9-12.

For the past six years I've worked at a 4th through 8th grade school and it's a really weird mix. It's also really hard for administrators to be skilled at navigating that range of grade levels, worse even with the K-8s.

I was part of the class that was transitioning from junior high school to middle school. So I went to...
Elementary school: grades K-6
Middle school: 7-8
9th grade center: 9
High school: 10-12

I need to see what they ended up doing with the 9th graders. I think they might go to high school now.

As for my children, I have no idea but I would assume they would now go to middle school.

Middle School, 6-8. But they started doing construction on my elementary school when I was in 4th grade, so we were in the Middle School building from 4-8 grade.

Shortly after I got into high school (in 9th grade), they completed construction, and now the Elementary school is divided into 2 different sections (same building, but different wings) - Primary (K-3), Intermediate (4-5), then they move to the Middle school (6-8), and then on to the high school (9-12).
