My sister was a counselor there too, and is going to do wilderness/outdoor stuff for her career based on her experience. I think it's great for kids to be away from parents and in the outdoors with their peers for a couple weeks! It was an environmentally focused camp in a wildlife refuge (former hippie commune in the 60s), and tremendously impacted my worldview and my path in life. Also went to girls sleep away camp for 3 weeks a summer for about 6 years. My two best friends are from camp and all 3 of us moved to Sydney, Australia from Canada and lived together for years in our 20s. Nothing in my life would be as it is now if it wasn't for camp and the friends I made there! My camps were typically education focused with somw fun. I didn't go to sleepaway camp until I was 14 or 15 and that was so much fun. I camped with the Girl Scouts even younger, but that felt more like a school fieldtrip.</p> <p>If I can talk DH into I would love to send LO to sleepaway camp when he's in elementary school. My parents totally worked it to their advantage. My brother's scout troop had a weeklong camp every summer. My parents would find me a GS camp the same week. I never went to a normal summer camp, but I went to academic ones where you got to study math or other subjects with other nerds.</p> <p>I hope my kids get to experience a real summer camp some day... and haha, I would love to have a few weeks off from parenting to just sleep and spend time with the OG Bee. </p>
