I just lost my brother and don't have it in me to do the planning. I really don't have the energy to make a big deal out of it. But a small family only party is too awkward due to my husband's parents being divorced and my family being out of town. I wanted to have a bigger party, just friends and their kids since we have no family here, but for various reasons the timing was bad and I just wasn't able to pull it off. We had a small one for her on the day of with cake and balloons with our next door neighbor's family. The big party was the weekend after. It was a fun get together for our friends and family who wanted to see how big she had grown. If it's a tough birthday month, you can always throw it a couple of weeks later. It can be as simple or as festive as you want it. Baby won't remember it at all. I went all out with the DIY decor and food, but then it snowed 8" the morning of her party and only 4 out of 35 guests made it - my in-laws who were staying with us and a couple that lived down the road! I was so bummed because I worked so hard! LO still ate cake though and had a fun day. We did end up having a redo the following weekend, but only 10 people made it to that one. :( If I had to do it over again, I'd buy the decor and put the food together once I saw the forcast. I think we just each brought a dish. We had a very quick DIY photoshoot (with white backdrop, bunting and party hats, matching white onesies) where we posed the babies with the cake. And unfortunately my LO threw a tantrum and basically stepped on the cake on the photoshoot, so no one ate any cake. haha.</p> <p>2 of my friends at that get-together had their own parties afterwards with their extended families. And we have a difficult birthday month too (end of January). However 1 year old is much easier because they are basically content at a boring indoor environment. You can do it at a restaurant if you want. I didn't plan or host a party, but on her bday my BIL and his gf, the only local family, came over for cake and singing and presents. Then a few weeks after dh's side had a family reunion and they planned a party for her, so I had nothing to do with it really but she was well celebrated. Then a week or so after than I went to visit my family and my sister hosted a bday brunch. I think there was over 60 people in the end. But we will keep to only close family for his other birthdays.</p> <p>DS's birthday is the middle of winter but we got very lucky and got a warmish still day so could have it outside on our deck.
