I didn't have a written plan, but my midwives and my doula were informed of my wishes. My husband and I had discussed it thoroughly as well, so he was there to advocate for me if needed. Thankfully, I wasn't pushed to do anything I didn't want, and everyone was very helpful/supportive/wonderful.

@youboots: I'm just curious why they liked it so much? Because it was short? Or was it the content they liked?

I did not have one. I just knew I wanted an epidural and I was willing to wait till I couldn't stand it anymore. That was it.

Not really, I did look for a long time though to find a practice and a place to give birth (birth center in a hospital) that followed all the things I would have wanted in a birth plan as standard practice. So things like skin to skin, delayed cord clamping, no iv, movement etc were all the norm and it made it really easy to slip the birth plan. Technically, they also had us full out a one page both plan but I there wasn't anything earth shattering on it.

Nope -- with neither birth. Failed induction with my first leading to a c-section (not much to do there). Second delivery will be at a very baby-friendly pro-VBAC hospital so anything I'd want to include in a birth plan is already standard operating procedure there.

Yup! It really helped me think through all the different parts of labor and how I hoped they would go. I was hoping to go unmedicated but realize that things don't always go according to plan and you don't get to decide everything. So, my birth plan included preferences if I went unmedicated, if I got an epidural or if I ended up needing a c-section. It worked out great!

Yes, I wanted a natural birth using hypnobabies, the tub, etc. Of course as soon as I was able to, I ended up asking for an epidural. I'm pretty sure the nurse laughed at me but I didn't care. No regrets either, the epidural was wonderful and my labor and birth was a very positive experience.

This time, my birth plan is to get the epidural. That is basically the whole plan.

Kind of...I had done some research and made a list, but when it actually came down to it, having a written birth plan would have not been useful. I delivered abroad and I asked around and no one does such a thing.

It was more for my peace of mind and mental preparations so I knew what would happen.

I had two. My initial one was for the birth I planned for and then once I had a scheduled cesarean I revamped it. If we have another I will create one with preferences for both outcomes VBAC or cesarean from the beginning.

I had an idea of how I wanted my birth to go (if possible of course). Didn't really have to share it because the clinic more or less functioned like that anyway. Less medicated possible, up on a table only for pushing etc. I was very satisfied about how if went, mostly!

Yes it was less than a page. Many nurses said it was the best one they had seen.

I had one for both births. My HMO asks us to to fill it out. I was really surprised with LO2, they asked me to fill it out during my glucose test. When is that - 20 something weeks? It seemed really early.

My labor with LO1 was really long. Everyone that attended to me read it. As they read it I remember them all basically summing up with "ok, unmedicated." I got a lot of grief for having a doula though. With LO2 I was 10cm when I walked in. We walked into the hospital with only my birth plan and a water bottle. Someone threw my birth plan across the room. I delivered. After I met the staff one of them grabbed my birth plan, glanced at it and laughed that I got exactly what I wanted.

With my first, yes- mostly I just wanted no drugs or interventions, if possible, and wanted dh to tell me the sec. everything else was hospital policy anyway. But I typed it and gave it to the nurse when I got there.

With my second I pretty much wanted the same things but knew it was hospital policy and that writing it down wasn't necessary.

I never got any grief or eye rolls that I saw!

My plan with both was to not HAVE a plan, haha.

This time around, I did tell my OB my loose 'goals' for labour - which was to start natural, then build up to gas, and get epi if I needed it. I was worried as it was an induction. Thankfully, the labour took off and went smoothly (and FAST - super fast!) and we didn't even end up with the epi!

My birth plan was as natural as possible but epidural if necessary! Skin to skin immediately after, no formula anywhere, only certain visitors, etc. My midwife was great and went over it with me, and as things progressed quickly, encouraged me to go natural. I ended up not having time for the epidural, got the baby out in about five pushes (he was 3 weeks early, 5lb)

My birth plan was 'go with the flow.' All I wanted was a safe delivery that ended with a baby in my arms and it didn't matter how we got to that point. It worked well for me and I was happy with both my deliveries.

Yes! I shared it with DH, my doulas, and my OB long before labor, and they were all on board. And then at the hospital I had a copy for the nurses, but I don't think they read it! Fortunately, everything went great, I'm glad we were all on the same page. To me, a birth plan is about being informed and feeling like an active participant in birth, not the document of entitlement some people make it out to be.

I did with my first but was too timid to share it with anyone and since I was induced, it wouldn't have gone according to plan anyway. With my second I had hopes but no plans and I felt a little less shocked by how it went. Did you have a birth plan?
