Her mom did it too and the book that most of these cakes came from now have 3 generations of people's names and dates of when that cake was made. It's pretty awesome to see that your monkey cake was also Aunt Paula's 10th birthday cake or whatever. The non-birthday ones would go to school, which made us popular in elementary school (everyone wanted to be in our classes); this would never fly nowadays, of course! She also used to do birthday cakes for my 20+ cousins. To accommodate everyone's wishes she would make both white and chocolate cake mix and pour them into the pan from both sides until they met in the middle. Voila, half white and half chocolate cake. The cakes themselves were decorative masterpieces. She had well over a hundred Wilton cake pans, with all sorts of characters on them.
