I had a friend who didn't have the greatest experience but she gave birth over a holiday weekend and they had a skeleton staff on hand. Plus she had some complications that made for a worse experience too.

@regberadaisy: my first labor nurse was cold and almost rude. She was very unsympathetic and not compassionate. I came in sobbing, in a lot of pain, with contractions a minute long every 2 minutes and she just handed me the gown and said go change in there. No offer to help. Luckily after a couple of hours there was a shift change and I got an angel of a nurse.

I had a negative experience at a well-liked hospital. I had a long labor, at a busy time, with a doula that seemed to aggravate the nurses and midwives. I delivered #2 at a different hospital because I didn't want to go back to the first place.

I had a great experience at the hospital where I delivered and most others I know who delivered there did, too. The nurses were great and so were the doctors (saw 3/5 of the OBs from my practice during my induction and delivery)! One of my neighbors had a negative experience with regards to BFing/with the lactation consultants, but I didn't experience that at all.

Loved loved the L&D nurses for both. Like @sera the recovery nurses are hit/miss especially in regards to BFing / formula! That seems to be the norm from what I hear.

In every case I loved my labour & delivery nurses. It's the post natal ones that I found to be hit or miss.

People had different experiences based on their own labors but I haven't heard anything negative about the hospital or staff. I will say my labor nurse this time was a little abrupt- very competent just not so soothing or whatever. Perfectly fine considering how short of a time I labored there but my nurse the first time was a better personality fit for me. I had an extra great but all were very good.

I've never heard anything particularly negative about the hospital I delivered DS1 at. But I think so much depends on the nurses and doctor you have. I found the nurses hit or miss. Either wonderful or cold and perfunctory.

I absolutely loved the hospital where I gave birth. The nurses were amazing and so helpful. They laughed with me when I laughed and calmed me down when I got upset. They even had sandwiches for us new moms in their fridge when the cafe was closed at 2am and I was starving. :)

But, I hear a lot of negative things from other moms who give birth there. I don't understand it but I know some of them gave birth a few years before I did and the hospital did build out a new women's center right before I delivered.
