Yes, DH and I just bought a house back in our hometown and part of the decision involved our school system there.

Yup. My district was a blue ribbon district (small suburban school). The classes were challenging, and there were tons of opportunities for getting involved in sports, clubs, and community activities.

Yes, very happy. Though I suppose I better be for what it cost my parents. My prep school tuition was more than a lot of colleges.

I'm not sure. I grew up in a really tiny town and graduated with 50 other people. It was the biggest school in the area. Like @mrsmenow: I think having individual attention was great. However, because it was a rural town, funding was low, AP classes were not available, and lots of extracurricular activities weren't possible like they were at other schools. Thankfully, my parents knew the importance of teaching me outside of the classroom.

I went to private school from K-12. I'm very happy with my K-8 education. Our class size was so small, so we were like a family.

My 9-12 education was just okay.

No. I was never properly taught grammar, which is frustrating. I feel like we did mostly memorization and very little higher level thinking. Of course, this is my opinion after getting a Masters in Elementary Education.

YES. I went to private schools and although at the time I felt my prep school was too high pressure, in retrospect I realize what an amazing place it was. Although college admission was a huge deal, they somehow really let the kids be themselves. It was an environment full of incredibly intelligent, creative people and I feel a very strong connection to my friends from that era and the school itself. I'd definitely send my kids there if I lived in LA. Though who knows how I'd pay for it LOL

I suppose it did the job, but I should have gone to a different elementary school. Mine was full of kids from broken homes who weren't nice. I think it damaged my self-esteem for a long time. Sad thing is, my mom never knew how bad it was - we were always happy at home and says that if she had known, she would have pulled us out and put us in a different school.

Yes! I went to public school in NYC. I was in the G&T program before it became what it is today (I don't like how political and tied to income & socioeconomic status it seems to be today). My high school was awesome. For the most part I had amazing teachers, extracurricular activities, and I was challenged.

Absolutely. I attended public schools k-12, at one of the top school districts in my state. My high school was often ranked among the top 100 in the USA according to the US news lists. I had great teachers and great preparation for college.

For the most part. K-2nd was private and pretty good. 3-8 public and excellent. 9-12, also public, was terrible. The school I went to kept switching administration and there was no leadership. It went downhill so fast that I ended up finishing 10-12 early at a community college so I could get out of the mess they made of a high school haha.

I think I got a good education in public school. Of course I occasionally had a teacher that I didn't love, but that's normal.

I did have an advantage, though--my mother was a teacher in my school district and she would always do some investigating to get the inside scoop on all the teachers so that we knew who to request. I'm grateful for that, as I'm sure she had access to info that the average parent wouldn't have been able to find out. One of the perks of having your mom teach at your high school!

Yes. I went through the public schools in Los Angeles (not on most people's top lists) but I went to magnet schools for middle school and high school. They were great! I was sort of in a unique school though since I took classes at the zoo. But it really helped me form my passion for biological sciences and I went on to study it in college.

I went to a really small rural school (think 125 people in my class total) and that was the biggest school in the area. I think in some ways it was great and some ways not. You got a lot attention from the teachers with the classes so small, and while we did have opprotunities to take AP classes I don't think there were as many/encouraged as much as bigger schools.

I went to NYC public schools grade 1-12, a few weeks after I arrived in the country. As a mega-large urban school system it gets a bad rap but I think my education rocked. I didn't speak a lick of English and 12 years later I was off to an Ivy League college. The enrichment opportunities were incredible, too. I really owe my life to NYC public schools.

Yep! I went to parochial school k-8. The teaching was much less focused on testing. We had one major standardized test we took but it wasn't a big deal and we didn't spend weeks or months drilling for it. I went to a specialized high school (public) and thought I got a great education and was extremely well prepared for college.

I'm not saying I loved it while it was happening but looking back I think I'm pleased with my k-12 education.

Meh...I felt like I needed a bit more one on one time with some subjects like math, and never got the help that I needed so I constantly struggled. I missed a few months of my 2nd and 3rd grade years because I was very ill, so I missed a lot of the basics of math and never got caught up. I think they could have done a better job of helping me out, or finding me some help. I'm not sure how much my parents pushed the issue with that though.

Yes, our school district was top notch... and my HS also had highly ranked extracurricular activities (everyone was involved in everything - USB, key club, football, dance team, marching band, etc). There were so many opportunities to be involved in school, and I had some amazing teachers who left an everlasting impression on my life.

I went to public schools for K-12. I got very lucky with my K-6 teachers, I think. My 7th-8th grade education was pretty good, although who knows because puberty was a very distracting experience.

In 9th-12th grade, I focused more on non academic development and in retrospect I think that turned out to be a good thing? I think school overall focuses too much on knowledge, and not enough on social skills and values. That's just my gut sense though - maybe I'd feel differently if I had gone to a different school. Overall I feel good about things though.
