@yoursilverlining: I had a very similar childhood. It was so great!

It was a very happy childhood, and my parents were/are so supportive.

Yes, and I owe that to my parents. They set a great example of a happy, healthy marriage and always worked together to put my brother and I first. We were not wealthy, but there was always money for sports stuff, music lessons, private math tutoring (me!), etc. And they always made time for us; coming to every game, concert, etc. I hope to replicate a lot of my experience for LO!

I really did, I'm so lucky. My parents did everything they could for us, but still managed to instill a sense of responsibility and appreciation for what we've earned. Sometimes it was tough because my dad was hard on us, but I appreciate it so much now, the real world isn't always easy.

It was absolutely the best childhood a girl could have asked for. It was SO happy, I'm so thankful to my parents for giving us that.

Yes until 7th grade, when I developed depression, and it was just downhill from there. It of course could have been worse, but I struggled a lot with depression, bulimia, and cutting for a long time, in addition to a mother who was crazy and parents who fought constantly. But seriously, it could have been worse, we always had money and I went to a good school. I don't have much to complain about!

Yes and no. My parents divorced when I was 2 years old and money was always tight with my mom raising me and my two brothers with very limited support from my dad. She even managed to send us to private school, which I am so grateful for.

I think my family life could have been a lot better, but it was still much better than what many people have. And I was lucky enough to go to a small Catholic school which had a very supportive, close-knit community. I think that made a massive difference.

Yes, absolutely. I owe that to my parents. I'm so lucky that they're still together and happy and they devoted their lives to making our lives as good as possible. The only really traumatizing thing that I can think of is that we were latchkey kids, and when my brother went to private school for high school, I was a latchkey kid all alone and sometimes had to walk home 3 miles if I couldn't find a ride home if I missed the bus. But that wasn't until I was in middle school. And the only reason we were latchkey kids was because both my parents worked like dogs!!

Super happy! All my problems were first-world problems.

So it made it more of a shock when I got to college and my dad got brain cancer, I was working and going to school full time, was always broke, had to drive 6 hours each way home on weekends to help with my dad, and generally was severely stressed/depressed for the first time in my whole life.

Everything was pretty idyllic up to that point. After my dad passed away, I was able to remember and appreciate that I'd had such great parents and such a great life for as long as I did..and then I felt lucky.

Yes, but I think it helps that I'm a very optimistic person to begin with. I tend to always look on the bright side, and find the good in things. I can say that if I was the opposite, I probably would have had a pretty crappy childhood though, there was a lot that went on.

YES! it is one of the reasons I want to move out to the country (we are suburbs right now) or buy a cottage when we have children. I grew up in the country and had so much freedom to play and use my imagination. It was amazing.

Well, it was both happy and pretty sucky. I feel like I made it out without much scarring. My sister still has some issues that she sees a therapist for, but she's a more emotional person than me, so things affect her differently.

I was pretty happy growing up, up until around 6th grade! Then things got really hard...

I hope we can give our kids a happy childhood!
