I agree with the others that by pumping you are telling your body your baby needs that milk. If you stopped pumping and just hand expressed to relieve discomfort your body would probably regulate within several days.

I think it's great you want to donate though, coming from a low supply mama :)

that sounds normal to me. i was engorged 24/7 until 3-4 months and that was with the baby feeding on demand every 2-3 hours and also pumping, which probably didn't help with the oversupply. it will regulate! breastfeeding is all supply and demand. your body won't regulate for a while, this is the best time to build your stash. ;)

I've had an oversupply and overactive let down with both of my babies. I feed only on one breast and sometimes do block feedings (feeding on the same side twice) in order to help regulate it. My oversupply has ended up being a problem with both babies because they get full from foremilk and don't finish the breast and get to the hindmilk leading to green poops and gassy unhappy babies. I was told by my LC that I should not pump because this perpetuates the oversupply and only to hand express. I would say though that at 12 days postpartum your supply is still regulating so you are probably feeling full because of that not necessarily a oversupply issue.

@lawbee11: thanks! The once a day pumping doesn't bother me it only takes me 10-15 minutes to pump that much. And if I could help another baby that seems very rewarding. I have like 45oz frozen already in 9 days. Lol I'm a sahm for now though.

@Kemma: I ordered a scale and did 2 weighed feedings today and she took just over 2oz Both times. I'm going to weigh her at the same time for the next 3 days and weigh her day feeds and track it so I have some info for her 2 week appt Monday. I started feeding her every 2 hours during the day yesterday and last night and today she is eating more frequently as well. So I think we're on the right track!

I have slight oversupply but at five weeks pp it seems to be settling. I agree with the others that the pumping is probably contributing to the oversupply.

@BabyPenguinXO: how's the weight gain going now?

@BabyPenguinXO: If you WOH definitely freeze it and save it for later! I was making a more milk than I needed up until about 5-6 months. It saved me when I started having trouble pumping enough later on.

@BabyPenguinXO: Oh wow that's a lot! I would try to cut down on how many ozs you pump. You're signaling your body to continue to producing that much so as long as you pump your body will produce it. I think hand expressing would help a lot but if you pump I'd do the least amount possible.

ETA: This is just to help with the oversupply. If you want to continue pumping and donate definitely do that, but if/when you want to stop that's what I would do.

@lawbee11: I pump like 5-6oz total. I have been considering donating. I don't mind having to pump once a day. I guess I was just wondering if it's common or if I have an over supply maybe!

I did but it doesn't sound like it was as much as this. When you pump how much are you pumping? I'd hand express instead and express just enough to take the edge off. It'll be uncomfortable for a few days but it should get better.

My LO is 12 days old. I have been pumping once a day usually at night before bed because my breasts get so full it's uncomfortable. She's eating well and everything.

I have heard that at first you have extra milk while its regulating to what your baby needs.
Then there are women who can't make enough right away so it's just weird to me.

My son was in the NICU so with him I pumped every 3 hours right away. My daughter was able to skip the NICU and nurse right away so she is EBF.

Is this normal I am having to pump or do I perhaps have an oversupply?
