I had dogs growing up, but wasn't really close to one until we got a great dane when I was 12. She died my freshman year of college, at 7. She was such an interesting dog. We lived on a lot of land, so she was always killing critters and roaming around. She actually died in a fight with a miniature donkey my parents agreed to keep for a friend. I think it was how she wanted to go, to be honest. She wasn't one to give up on anything.

Now I have a boxer that I'm head over heels for, she's seriously my canine soul mate. I already have pics of her snuggling our little girl. My husband's red heeler isn't really as interested yet, but she's been pretty protective of children, so I think they'll be good buddies too. I tease the hubs about getting a puppy for Charlie to be her own (when she's old enough to help out, of course) but with 2 dogs over 50lbs, I wouldn't really feel right about bringing in a third.

We always had pets growing up. It was always hard when we lost one, but even losing a pet teaches you so much about love, and life.

As sad as it was when we lost a dog or cat, we always came through it, and learned to move on, an important lesson when we lost our first relatives. You can't shield your child from death altogether, it is just impossible.

We will definitely have pets around our kids, from the moment they are born, so chances are we will have pets pass on when are kids are relatively young, and I am sure I will approach it the same way my parents did.

I had one pet growing up, a dog named Buster. We got him when I was 5 or 6 and he just died a year ago during a random April blizzard. I've only seen my dad cry 3 times: his mom dying, his dad dying, and our family dog dying. It would have been emotional for me regardless but seeing my dad so heartbroken just tore me up. Husband and I have two dogs now which will (hopefully) be around when our kids our born. We like the responsibility and compassion that come with kids having animals.

We had dogs growing up, but my dad always gave them away after about a year or two. *TRAUMA*. I have a cream pomeranian that I had to leave with my sister/family when I got married and moved to GA. :( I miss him lots and will probably die a little when he dies..

I don't think we're going to get pets for our children. I'm sure they'll want a puppy, but I don't think I can handle taking care of, loving and losing another puff of fluff.

Mrs. Bee and I both had many wonderful pets. We had so many that I'll share a bit about some of our favorites.

My first dog Yochan was my favorite pet ever. She was like the dogs in that book, Where The Red Fern Grows... so brave and loyal and loving. After she died, a part of me died and was gone forever.

Bee had a cat named Sparky who was also wonderful. She was brave and loyal and loving... she reminded me a lot of Yochan. She was the only cat I've ever met that was so loving and caring. Maybe it was b/c she was the runt of the litter? I always told Bee that if our daughter was as wonderful a person as Sparky, then I would be happy.

I would like our kids to experience that kind of intense bond and love with a pet. But I also worry that pets often die after so few years. I'm not sure if the kids would be able to cope with watching them die. By which I mean, I don't know if I'd be able to deal with it!
