Thankfully it was our only option. I was in the hospital for a long time, so I would have been really uncomfortable in a shared room.

Yes we had a private room, I'm not aware of any hospitals near me that have shared rooms. I also stayed in the same room the entire stay. All the times I went in for pre-term labor I had a private room as well. I don't think I could handle having to share a room with another woman who is in labor!!!

We had to pay $100 each night to "upgrade" to a private room. They didn't bill insurance, only took cash beforehand which I thought was totally weird.

We had a private room. We were told during the tour that almost all the rooms were private;they only doubled up when it was very busy and would move the second person out as soon as a room was available.

@hummusgirl: haha, we could probably talk forever about it. Honestly, living here has made me appreciate a lot of things about Dallas that I definitely didn't appreciate living there...like, I thought, that's how it was everywhere!

For instance, at my old ob/gyn (in Presbyterian's Margot Perot center for women's health) gave us real robes, not paper, and comfy new, clean socks during exams, and had huge beautiful rooms, super nice waiting room, valet parking, and state of the art equipment there in the office--3d sonograms, regular sonograms, everything.

Here in Hoboken, I went to the doctor's group most recomended on mommy boards and comparatively, the waiting room and office were run down, the rooms were *teeny* without even a chair for my husband and no place to put my clothes when I took them off, the front desk staff was shouting across to each other about ordering pizza, then proceeded to eat it AT the front desk in a big group, while nauceous pregnant ladies sat 3 feet away. The office can't do ultrasounds themselves, they refer you to the hospital, which was even worse. Sigh. Just....sigh.
=)

There are plenty of things I like about living here, but the general customer service is definitely not one of them.

Our hospital charges a $25 fee for a private room if you have insurance or are private pay. If you don't pay the fee, you may not get a private room. Pretty good deal since the fee also gives you a couple of parking passes. they do this since most other hospitals in the area have all private rooms, so they need this to compete.

All the rooms were private at my hospital. They were all large and had whirlpool tubs and they would bring in a twin size bed for the Dad. You could pay an extra $600 and get the deluxe room, which had a lakefront view, a big screen TV with blue ray, a limo ride home, and a gourmet 3 course meal but we opted not to do that!

Yep, all of the rooms at our hospital were private. I couldn't imagine sharing. I passed out the first time I went to the bathroom to pee. I made a mess and my gown flew open. I was embarrassed enough in front of my MIL!

@Anagram: I'm from Dallas and just gave birth in NYC, and I kept thinking about the crazy sh*t we put up with here that would never happen in Texas, especially the shared room situation. That would never fly at big, beautiful Baylor! Oh well, we had a healthy baby/mom which is all I cared about..

To answer the question, I thought we'd do a private room, but in the end I couldn't justify $800/night (our hospital's private rooms may be the most expensive in the city) and our shared room was fine. Just one of the many indignities we endure for the privilege of living in this great city, I suppose!

Yup, as I talked about in a couple other threads, not having a private room is my biggest concern right now. These are the things that crop up that make me wish we were still in Dallas! We don't live in NYC, we live in Hoboken currently, but it's the same at the two hospitals we have a choice to go to here with our current OB/GYN. We *should* be able to get a private room, but it depends on how busy it is that day. YUCK

One of those hospitals (hoboken university medical) is already crossed off our list because we had to go there for our ultra sound and every single employee we encountered seem completely and totally incompetant except for our ultrasound tech. She was great (in Dallas, I would say she's average/normal), but she was nice and had manners, which is more than I can say for all the people we encountered in check in/intake/front desk.

So that leaves us with Palisades medical center, which we're planning on visiting soon. If we don't like it there, I'm considering changing Ob/Gyns and going to Valley hospital all the way in Ridgewood.

For those of you not in NJ, Ridgewood (bergen county) is kind of like Westchester county, NY, or the stamford/greenwhich of CT (maybe less well-to-do than greenwhich).

But then part of me feels like I'm crazy for considering a 1-2 hour drive, depending on traffic, just for a private room and nice people?

But then other times, I think....for my first, I'll do whatever to get nice people when I'm doing this for the first time?

You can see I'm kind of fixated on thsi right now. ;-)

I had a private room and I couldn't imagine sharing a room. Mostly because my son was in the NICU and I would have had an emotional breakdown if I had been in a room with a mother who had the infant in the room with her. It was hard enough being on the same floor with women and their babies.

NYC urban hospitals are probably some of the only ones in the US that still have mostly shared rooms and charge several hundred dollars a night (more than hotels!) for private rooms.

I couldn't get a private room both times because the few that were at the hospitals I delivered at were already occupied when I birthed. Sharing a postpartum room wasn't too bad in my experiences. For a good chunk of time I was the only patient in there anyway. Then maybe I just lucked out with nice roommates. It sucked that DH couldn't spend the night, but the second time I wanted him home with DD more anyway.

@Mrs. Jacks: first hours post-birth usually patients are still in their (private) L&D room... then once stabilized and the room is ready, etc... go to the shared post-partum room. Last time I birthed at 7p and didn't go to my room til midnight. Just saying you usually don't share a room while all the afterbirth stuff (first bf'ing session, baby getting evaluated, etc) is still going on.

No I was in a ward with 3 other mums but husbands were encouraged to stay and I think everyone's did. The only downside wss one woman's visitor swearing like a trooper the next day and a random guy pulling my curtain inside to ask me to turn my tv down so he could make a very loud phone call. I was too enthralled by A to really notice anyone else though.
