I thought it would be tough but it was seriously no big deal. We kept the curtain pulled the whole time so I never even saw the lady I was sharing a room with! All the hospitals here in Boston seem to be almost exclusively private rooms (one friend had to share for a night because they were just crazy full the night she had her son, in the middle of a baby boom). My sister had a terrible roommate the first night after she had her son in NYC and sent her husband to pay any amount of money to move them (nurses took pity and moved her anyway). They do transfer you to a different room after delivery, but it's still private. I've worked in many hospitals and actually never seen shared rooms for post-partum! I'm guessing there is some amount of regionality to it. It was huge and fancy too since its a new hospital. I felt like I was on vacation, you know, with the added "fun" of the whole being in labor and pushing out a human from my vagina thing. My hospital also had a separate wing for L&D and recovery. Which was nice because the recovery wing had blackout curtains and strict rules on noise levels and visitors for moms who would be sleeping all day. They also had a pretty cool couch that folded to become a super comfy cushy bed for Dad's to stay in room with Mom's the entire stay. I had an extended stay because of a c section, and it was a huge room with an extra bed so mr bee could stay with me the entire time. second time i had a shared room, and it was totally fine. i was alone most of the time, and i didn't have the first time parent anxiety. plus private rooms are super expensive here! I had several other issues with that hospital too, including hearing a lot of horror stories about their triage process. Only way to get a private room was to have a csection - and partners/dads were only allowed to stay if you were in a private room, so hubby couldn't stay with me since I was in a shared room. When I gave birth, the maternity ward was super packed but when all the private rooms were full, the hospital put the overflow from maternity on an empty part of the pediatric unit instead of doubling us up. It was awesome, the rooms were bigger and the nurses were sooo excited to be working with healthy babies and mommies rather than sick kids! I spent four hours there with several women coming in and out. Private L&D. Shared recovery room. The staff insisted someone would be coming in at any time but nobody did. It sucked to be on edge waiting though. LO2: Private everything.
