My parents were big on no TV in my room, and though I hated it at the time, I'm totally doing the same with my kids! We just had one family computer in the office. I got a laptop as a graduation gift after high school so I'd have a computer for college. When I was really young, it was just for watching movies. Once I got to be a little older, 12 maybe, it was hooked up to receive cable. I got a computer in middle school. It was an old desktop that my uncle built and it wasn't connected to the internet. My parents had a TV in their room and there was one in the family room and basement. We had one computer in the house by the time I left for college but I didn't use it yet for anything except writing papers ('95). Our LO will not have a TV or a computer in her room. I don't even want a tv in my own bedroom! We always had computers because my dad fixes them for a living. They used to have their own business fixing computers, now he runs the IT dept of a school district. Growing up with had one TV and one computer - both were in the living room so our parents could monitor what we watched and what we did on-line. In high school, the computer moved into the office and we got a second TV in the "family room" which was in the basement. My brother and I shared this TV, but still had to take turns on the computer. If we wanted to watch tv, it was in the family room so our parents could keep an eye on what we were watching. Our kids will not have one in their rooms, either, until they are at least 12 or so. And I didn't have a computer in my bedroom until I was out of grad school! I was so excited when I bought it lol! My DH and I disagree a bit whether or not kids should have tvs in their rooms. My niece and nephew (8 & 10) have had one for years....but I don't think I'll let our kids have their own tv until middle school at the very least.
