@GreenThumb: Totally jealous of your hysteroscopies!! :) Maybe it depends on how gentle the doctor is, too? I don't know. My most recent was bad because there was a resident there "practicing" and once she took over it was super painful. If my RE had kept doing it, it would have been better, I think.

I had one last month.. It was pinchy and uncomfortable and I had some cramping later that day through the night. I also had quite a bit of spotting the first two days. I'm fine now though. It's not a awesome experience but not the worst thing. Good luck!

I think people's experiences with hysteroscopies can be as varied as with HSGs. My HSG was terrible and I almost passed out from the pain, but of course, I did have a blocked tube. While I've had two hysteroscopies (only with Advil beforehand) and had little to no pain with either. I just had my second a couple of weeks ago as part of pre-FET and literally felt a slight bit of discomfort, less than AF cramping.

When I was with my old RE, she wanted to do a biopsy, but I didn't trust her after my HSG. She said it wouldn't hurt, and it did! She didn't seem to keen on giving me anything. So I never went through with it when I was with her.

Then I saw a new doc (OBGYN) and he did a combined hysteroscopy and biopsy, and I was put under general anesthesia. If you ask me, that's the way to go!

So, @babycanuck: to answer your questions...1. yes. 2. Depends on how it's done I guess. 3. I was out, so no pain, and just a general dull ache after, but I also had polyps removed, so that may have been the cause of that.

If you can get drugs, even just some calming ones, or the "twighlight" ones, do it. I'm a huge baby and ask for drugs whenever I can. That makes me sound like I have a problem or something, but for me, the stress that the anticipation causes makes things a lot worse! It's easier to go in there knowing you're being made as comfortable as possible.

@Shutterbug: never had the HSG because my tube blockage (my only tube) was found clogged during a cyst lapro surgery. The first hysteroscopy was in 2011 before IVF #1 and then I had another last summer and then again last month. Had to repeat the one last month due to the IVF study (has to be within 6 months)....grrr! I took Valium the first two times and wished I did this third time. It really hurt. So I personally would recommend valium in conjunction with the advil. (800mg per my RE, but some places are less) It is quick, though! :)

@babycanuck: oh, I've had an HSG, and I agree, that's all very good advice!

@Jenn23: ack three?? Did you have an HSG too? Was it comparable? I'm not as worried about the hysteroscopy as the EB, I guess because they're just in there looking, not taking anything out.

@Shutterbug: I've had three hysteroscopies, so ask any questions you may have!

@babycanuck: I haven't had this procedure done. Can you have pain meds administered? Or Valium at least?

@Shutterbug: I had two HSGs done - one was great, the other not so much.

Make sure you take advil before and ask them to take their time injecting the solution. The faster they do that, the worse the cramping is. Putting the catheter in was uncomfortable but once it was in, it's in.

@pui: I'll keep it all in mind and maybe take something stronger. I think I'll ask DH to come with me to hold my hand, too!

@babycanuck: :( Yeah... I don't want to sugar coat it. It sucked. But like I said I was in and out of the office in like 10 minutes tops and the actual procedure was only a fraction of that... at least it's fast!

@babycanuck: thanks for asking this question! I have to have one too (not sure when yet) and also a hysteroscopy. There's so much on the boards about HSGs, but not much about these two procedures! I have some vicodin left over from my egg retrievals and I seriously might take one and have DH take me to/from my appointment.

I had one. I had it a few days after my HSG.

After the HSG went very well (pretty much completely painless), I wasn't too worried about the biopsy... but the biopsy was definitely not as easy.

I'll admit... the biopsy was NOT fun. It stung really bad when he put the instruments through my cervix and the pain stayed steady the whole time he was in there. I experienced a sharp pain when he collected the sample. The good news is the whole procedure was probably 3 minutes long.

I had some slight spotting for the rest of the day, but nothing too bad. I recommend taking some Advil before the procedure.

I'm super nervous about having this done.

Have you had it?
What should I expect?
How bad was the pain?
Any other things I should know about?
