No episiotomy, and I had a small tear that didn't require any stitches. I didn't tear with my second either, and he came a lot faster than my first.

Yep, I had one. My OB typically doesn't but after pushing for two hours, I was telling them to cut me open! (I meant my belly, but yano, whatever works! :P)... DS was born with 14 inch head. I have no regrets. And healed normally with no issues.

No, I tore though. Like pretty bad. DS just slipped right out after his head came. They couldn't have me pause to get him situated! I guess they give episiotomies less often because the body heals better to natural tears.

I don't believe I had one but I had bad tearing (extensive 2nd degree and now have perineal scar tissue that makes sex painful. Blah). I hope this doesn't scare you. I am the only lucky one of my friends with this problem

No, my OB said it's only something she does when it is absolutely necessary and rarely performs them. She was VERY good about having me labor down, using hot water and other stuff, and slowly pulling E out little by little so that I would minimally tear (i only tore b/c of her nose, dammit!). Only two stitches for me.

Nope and I barely tore. My OB wanted to give me one stitch and I freaked out (because even after delivering a baby I am still a baby about medical stuff) and so she left me alone. She massaged me with olive oil while I was pushing and so I think that may have helped me avoid tearing. My OB is my new hero. She was amazing!

Nope. The OB did a perineal massage in between pushes. I had a between a 1st and 2nd degree tear, though. Nothing awful, though it was the most painful part about recovery.

I had one, and a forceps delivery, and my recovery was a piece of cake. I think because I had an obstetrics surgeon doing my forceps delivery and stitch up, it was very well done. My midwives always seemed very impressed when they checked me down below! I never felt much pain and never had issues sitting for long periods, or any down there stuff.
TMI alert - sex is definitely different since the baby. Feels like the first time!!

@Foodnerd81: Yep. I'm not pro or anti episiotomy (I know they are occasionally necessary), but I am extremely pro informed consent. It really bothers me when it happens without permission from the mama, especially in a non-emergent situation.

Nope. My doc told me she very rarely does episiotomies...flash forward to labor and the doc who happened to be in call was begging to give me one. Ugh. I declined and tore naturally. 2nd degree external that was a little painful but ultimately healed up just fine.

@LovelyPlum: @mrschampagne: I did not realize they "came with the territory" of a vacuum assist? I had a vacuum but no episiotomy- but because I was so freaked out about them I think I mentioned it a bunch of times.

@arden: I had a really wonderful birth experience overall but the one and only thing that bothers me is the ob (came in at the end of a midwife delivery bc of heart rate issues) was about to cut me when I managed to push her out. She didn't, so it doesn't mater, but it bugs me a little that she didn't say anything. And that was in a really pro natural birth hospital with midwives and everything. So I agree with your point.
