@VEGMAMA: Wow, see, those were the types of stories that made me stop and think about it!

My brother and I never had imaginary friends but we always played together (3 yrs apart) so maybe that had something to do with it?

I never did, but more so because I "knew" that there wasn't such a thing/it wasn't real (I loooved to read anything and everything so I was very critical of things like cartoons and such from a young age: "Mom, there is no way that that anvil could fall on him and he'd get up again...this is dumb." Hahahah, I wasn't much fun.

I didn't ... but I voted on the 'ghost' one. It sounds silly, but I really believe that. My sister (who was a lot younger than me) had an imaginary friend for a few years. The details she would tell us were so unusual, and he eventually 'died' ... It was very traumatic for her, and always creeped me out.

I spent a lot of time talking to myself as a kid... I think once I tried to make up an imaginary friend so someone would be on the other end of the conversation, but that lasted about a day ;)

When I was a kid I spent a lot of time in a very small rural hospital. There were only a few rooms so sometimes I ended up sharing a room with someone else. Every time one of my roommates would die, they came back as my imaginary friend. The two I remember most clearly were Smokey (a senior who died of lung cancer; he used to tell me stories about traveling around the country by hitching rides on train cars) and Boogey(a high schooler who eventually died from injuries he got in a motorcycle crash; his real name was Robert). I think it was my way of dealing with death/grief at a pretty young age, but who knows. It could've been ghosts. :)

I didn't have one but my little brother did. His name was Peter and he was very mischievous. My dad kicked him out of the car on a road trip and my brother was hysterical over it. But Peter never came back! Haha my whole family loves this story. It embarrasses my brother to no end!

I had a whole group of them, inexplicably called "The Fuddies." I'm told that I once locked them in the bathroom and my dad had to take the doorknob off. When my mom asked me why I put them in the bathroom, I responded with "the girl Fuddies are ok but those boy fuds were driving me crazy." I think I was about 4. I don't remember what happened to them. I think they just went away when I went to kindergarten.

After someone posted about the creepy things kids say the other day, I went and read the original Reddit post and most of the responses to it (there were thousands).

ETA: The post asked parents to comment with the creepiest thing their child ever said/did.

I couldn't help but notice that a recurring theme in the responses was kids between ages 2 and 7(ish) having imaginary friends that they talked to, played with, and often described in great detail. Several parents said they did some research and discovered that a person with the same name as their child's imaginary friend, had, in fact, existed, and had some tie to the house they lived in or the surrounding area. Normally, the imaginary friend would disappear between ages 7 and 10. The implications of the responses were that these imaginary friends were actually ghosts or spirits, and some kids could see them because they hadn't yet been taught to believe things like that don't exist.

I thought it was freaky, but super interesting.

I didn't have an imaginary friend growing up, but my younger sister did. He had a very unique name and she'd talk to him and play games with him and talk about him to us. She said he was "just a little boy." I'd pretend to see/talk to him and she'd usually tell me he wasn't there right now or that I was facing the opposite direction he was, etc, looking at me like I was a total moron. He disappeared one day and I can't remember where she said he went.

I was kind of jealous and wanted an imaginary friend for myself, so I tried to make one up, but I couldn't.

I know all the psychological explanations for childhood imaginary friends, but that Reddit post got me thinking.

Did you have an imaginary friend when you were little? What was his/her name? What happened to that friend as you grew up?
