@PawPrints: Really, weird for a stroller in a grocery store?? Maybe it's where you're living, but in Boston, all the moms use their stroller as a grocery cart. All of the strollers have the huge storage space so I usually can did almost a week's worth of groceries just at the bottom. I don't think it's weird and even if other people did, I wouldn't let their opinions bother me. We also used a stroller a lot in the beginning so it was so easy to just do the snap and click and move the baby to the stroller from the car without unbuckling him. This was great in the winter because we didn't have to worry about exposing him too much to the elements and just kept him bundled in the carseat.

Yep and it has been worth the extra cost. I got a convertible seat for my car but we are still using the infant seat in DHs car at almost 11 months. We have a Chicco keyfit and a small baby so although it was getting too heavy for me to lug back and forth, he's still within the height and weight. I think we'll get another month or two out of it and save it for baby #2.

Yes and I loveeed it. We switched to the convertible at 9.5 months. We still could have used it a bit longer because it wasn't outgrown but it was getting heavy and we already had a convertible purchased so we made the change. I wanted to make it through winter before switching because it was so much easier to bundle baby inside before we went out.

Yes! So huge to be able to take the baby out of the car without waking them up! It was absolutely worth it for us. LO1 used our Chicco KeyFit 30 for 10 months or so and now we'll use it for LO2. And I second the winter babies thing. I would feel guilty either running the car long enough to make a convertible car seat warm or putting baby in a cold seat. Being able to take it out of the base and carry the whole thing inside was crucial for my November and soon to be February babies.

Yes, we used it until 12 months. It was so convenient to just snap right into our stroller, or to keep her bundled up and sleeping after a car ride. I think I actually used it more on the stroller (since we have a walking commute to daycare) than in the car.

We skipped it and never missed it. We also never got a stroller, I just wore her. So that may be a reason a convertible worked so well for us. It would have been a pain for us to carry the seat around without a stroller to push it in.

We had a Chicco Keyfit 30 and switched to a convertible just before her first birthday. She hadn't technically outgrown it but she was starting to protest going in and just seemed uncomfortable. We hadn't taken the seat out of the base in months, though (except when she wasn't with us and we needed more space in the back seat -- I do miss being able to do that now).

DS is 6 months and just on the cusp of outgrowing his KeyFit 30 (granted he's in the 90th+ percentile, so he's pretty massive). He still falls asleep in it in the car and we bring it into the nursery to finish off the nap or click into the stroller to walk around. SUPER essential for us IMO. Sad DS is such a beast and is outgrowing it sooner than anticipated.

Honestly I don't know how anyone skips it. Especially winter babies... But if they are sleeping... Grab the stroller or put them IN the cart. That is perfectly fine. Just not ON the cart like the kid seat up front or across the basket horizontally. I actually tell people at stores to take their baby off there. There is a picture on walmarts carts that specifically say not to do that, and many other stores too.

I checked other because I skipped it but my mom bought me one and I got one when I bought a stroller later on. It's definitely great for restaurants. I would actually keep her in the convertible but bring along the infant one to put her in at restaurants.

@PawPrints: I think it's safe to put the carrier IN the cart... Not so safe to put it on top of the cart. I shopped with her in the cart all the time and also walked around the mall, park, etc with her sleeping in the carrier clipped into the stroller. As other posters have stated, it was also super useful for taking her to restaurants. Man, I miss those early days when we could go out to eat during her naps!

yes, for 8 months. For us it was completely necessary, LO always fell asleep in the car, so I just carried the carseat or stick in the stroller and allowed her to continue to sleep. She took great naps in the car seat too, I can't imagine not having one for those first few months (born in October, so we had lots of cold newborn months.)

@PawPrints: I never carried my seat or set it on a cart...we had a Mesa which clicked into our Vista and Cruz. Since those strollers had large baskets, we always used those for shopping and I never even used a shopping cart again until we stopped using the infant seat! If I looked bizarre, apparently I was oblivious to it.

We intended to skip it but then friends generously loaned us their barely-used Britax B-Safe so we'll use that once LO is here. Honestly I am having a hard time grasping the appeal of the infant seat. Everyone says you can let LO stay asleep while you're running errands, but how are you carrying the infant seat while you're in the store? It's not safe to put the seat inside a grocery cart, and everyone on another thread seemed to agree that it would be bizarre to push a stroller around a grocery store, so I'm not really getting how it's supposed to work. Unless you're just supposed to lug it by hand which seems obnoxious.
