You've probably read about my experience! As for side effects, I was glad to have the rest of the day just to relax, but I could have done something low key if necessary.

I don't think its too early to have an HSG done. Mine was really easy. I went to work right after and didn't even have any cramping. I've heard that if you have a blocked tube it is more painful. From the research that I've done, usually there is cramping or slight bleed afterwards. I was lucky and didn't have any of that.

I didn't have any long lasting side effects from my HSG. I was a little miserable afterwards because I had to go to a hospital 40 minutes from where I live, and drive myself home. I was crampy and uncomfortable, but by the next day I was fine.

Good luck to you!

I will tell you my experience, though you should know it is not typical. I did have pretty heavy bleeding and cramping for a few hours afterwards. Most people are fine-I sat on the bench outside of the hospital for an hour because I was so dizzy and nauseous.

The next morning, I woke up feeling AWFUL. I felt like I had a bad case of the flu-I could hardly move. I called my OB, and the doc on call told me that it was probably an infection, though I wasn't really considered high risk for one. He prescribed me antibiotics, but it took me a few days to get back on my feet. I had the procedure on a Wednesday, the day before the 4th of July, and I bled and spiked a fever from Thursday to Saturday, but by Monday I was better.

When the doc was trying to assess my risk for infection, he said that the risk factors included having living children or having a blocked tube. I had neither, but I still got an infection. I know some offices will give antibiotics beforehand to prevent it, but mine didn't. If I hadn't gotten an infection, it would have been extremely tolerable. Either way, it was still worth it, because I got a BFP three weeks later.

Eta: I think my experience had more to do with my body being prone to infections than anything done incorrectly at the procedure. I have a sensitive cervix, and I also tend to spike a fever easily. Combine that with the fact that I passed a lot of clots after the procedure, and I think it was just a recipe for a mess. If I ever need it again I will ask for antibiotics beforehand!

I hope I didn't spook you. I think my experience was extremely atypical. Good luck to you!!

I had two done & they were both very easy. The only issue I had was quite a bit of cramping for a couple days after. Definitely don't think it's too early to get it done

@PurplePumps: my HSG was very easy. The only side effects I had was some cramping and spotting. I took some Tylenol beforehand which helped, and wore a pantry liner afterward. I even drove myself back towork after the procedure.

I didn't have any lasting aide effects that affected my day. I returned to work after the procedure.

I had mine and felt perfectly well afterward. My stomach just didn't handle the antibiotic they gave me to take that morning and I proceeded to vomit it back up. They let me skip taking it after the procedure and all was well. Ask around for a referral to someone who specializes in hsg's if you can. My RE sends all cases to one radiologist because it can be a tricky procedure that you have to do often enough to stay good at.

@bluestriped bee: Do you think it was an allergy to the dye that caused your pain? Did you ever find out why it happen? I'm sorry still no BFP. :(

I just had the normal cramping and bleeding for a few days after my HSG. I took ibuprofen before the procedure and that was helpful.

I don't think it's too early. I didn't have too many side effects with mine, just a little cramping and spotting. I hope yours goes well and that you get a BFP soon!

@PurplePumps: I don't think it's too early to get an HSG done. I had mine done after 6 months of TTC. But here I am after 15 months and still no BFP.

As for my experience, I was an outlier with my HSG.

You can read about it here. http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/is-an-hsg-really-that-painful#post-335295

The HSG procedure was ok but I developed some sort post op pain. After getting tests done, they said it wasn't an infection either.

I don't think it's a normal occurance and judging from the responses, I think a majority of people go back to work after their procedure. I just unfortunately, did not have that experience.

Good luck to you. I hope your HSG gives you your BFP!

As for HSG recovery and side effects, I don't have much knowledge.

Hi! I haven't really posted questions here much, but I'm hoping you guys can help. I searched the boards and read about some of your experiences, but I was curious specifically about side effects and how long they lasted. Cramps? Bleeding? Infection? Does anyone know the chances of lasting side effects? There's always horror stories about fevers or bleeding for weeks, but how often does that actually happen? Is it normally really safe?
A little background on me: TTC - 11 months, 6th cycle just started. I'm going on a trip Aug 31, so I'd have to get the HSG sometime between this Sat and next. CD1 was Monday. If I can do the HSG Saturday, is that enough time to recover and make sure there was no side effects? I'm also just on the start of my 3rd cycle after 2 "normal" ones where we could really try. Cycle 1 - 100 days, I ended up O'ing while I had a UTI and 102 fever. Cycle 2 - normal, 40 days, but I was out of town. Cycle 3 - 100 days. Cycle 4 and 5 - normal and BD at the right time. Is it too early to do HSG and fertility work ups?
