My Mom preferred cats and my Dad preferred dogs. They are divorced now and my Mom and Step-Dad have cats and my Dad and Step-Mom have dogs.</p> <p>When I was born my parents had 2 or 3 cats - Patches, Black Beauty, and Whiskers. One of them had kittens when I was a toddler, so we kept one - mine - that I named Pinky. Super creative, I know. She passed away suddenly when I was like 8. :/</p> <p>We also had a dog because my dad preferred dog's. HER name was Petey - I was very confused. :p People always assume she was a boy. She got out and hit by a car when I was 11 or so. :/ That sucked. </p> <p>Then we got Chloe and then Howie (my mom still has them, they are about 8-ish?) and then my parents recently got a new kitten named Winnie (Winston). My Dad has several dogs, but I didn't live there, so they aren't "mine." </p> <p>FI and I have two doggies - Lucy &amp; Chevy. I hope our kids get to play with them and have good memories with them. She passed away my freshman year of high school. We also had 2 cats that we got when I was 7 or 8... and they passed away 6-7 years ago. At 7 we got our first dog. He named Cookie (yep, my parents let me name him whatever I want and that's what I chose). He was a chihuahua/terrior mix and he had neck problems (despite surgery) that put him in 24/7 pain. He finally went crazy from the pain and started biting people. We had to put him down when I was 14. I cried in bed for a whole day.</p> <p>We also got a second dog, a miniature dachshund named Sasha. We got her when I was 10 and she was 6 weeks old. She was a great dog. She had health problems, but was really loving and sweet until the end. My parents put her down, just last year, when I was 23. Glad your pup had a nice, long life with your family!</p> <p>My dad's allergic to fur so we didn't have any cats or dogs. We had gerbils, hampsters, fish, turtles, that type of thing. Nothing that I really cared too much about though.</p> <p>My husband had a dog when I met him though, and it was quite obvious that if I wanted to date him, I had to love his pup. I'm 22 though, so I guess that should be expected. Still so sad :(</p> <p>So let's reminisce so I can be not so sad!</p> <p>My first pet was a calico cat we got when I was 5. Her name was a big deal, so she ended up having a long name. Stacey Sugar Furball Mylastname. Stacey from me, Sugar from my sister (then 2 years old), and Furball from my dad. I guess my mom didn't really have an opinion haha</p> <p>My other 2 pets lived with my grandparents since they lived out in the country with a huge yard and we lived at the beach. They only lived 20 minutes from us, so we still saw them all the time. When I was 16, we moved to the same street as my grandparents.</p> <p>We had a cat named "Lucky" that we found as a kitten after a hurricane (hence the name). However Lucky got ran over twice (once by a car and once by a golf cart) years ago so we all joked that he wasn't really lucky...though he lived until he was 15 so I guess he kinda was.</p> <p>My dog that just passed away was Buddy, a collie. He looked just like Lassie and followed us around all the time. In the past few years, he would not leave my grandparents side when he could sense that they weren't feeling well.</p> <p>What pets did you have growing up? </p>
