GD is something I'm worried about because I'm overweight, and I love carbs (the two are related haha). Do you have to test your blood sugar levels yourself if you are controlling with diet, to see if it's working? That sounds like no fun. :(

I was over by a little on the 1-hour, and then one of my four levels was a little high on the 3-hour so I was diagnosed with GD. It wasn't terrible (though it seemed like the end of the world at the time!).

The diet was heavy on protein, lighter on carbs, mixing protein and carbs strategically for every meal/snack, and walking a lot. I was lucky that I was able to keep things under control with just diet and exercise. The most annoying thing was going to the hospital for extra ultrasounds, non-stress tests and reviews of my blood sugar levels (which was all fine in itself, just took a lot of time out of work). My baby ended up 6 lbs 3 oz, no complications with the delivery whatsoever.

I was diagnosed with GD after the 2 hour test (Canada does 2 hour).

I'm a carb lover, especially at breakfast, so found it hard to cut carbs, but I did it! I ended up on insulin for my fasting and lunch numbers bc they wouldn't budge. It wasn't so bad once I got in a groove. My baby was 5 lbs 8 oz.

I failed the 1 hour (I was post-call and that messes with your cortisol) and passed the 3 hour without problems. I did go more whole grain and less simple carbs for the rest of my pregnancy to be safe. My baby was 6 lb 4 oz.

I failed the one hour both times I took it, passed the three hour with flying colors in the first trimester and had one high number in the second trimester. The doctors' office wanted me to take the three hour test again and I refused because my three hour numbers were quite low both times (33 and 50). They went ahead and diagnosed me with GD. I had to take the test in the first trimester because my mom had GD.

I controlled my GD with diet, exercise, and Metformin. Dietary changes weren't too bad - I just had to balance my protein and carbs. Breakfast was the most difficult meal of the day because mine are usually carb laden. I ate a lot of scrambled eggs.

1. I can't answer because my GD was diagnosed by an A1C blood test early in my first trimester.
2. Smaller portions, less carbs. For me it meant less fruit, no regular soda, milk only at certain times of the day and more protein...it wasn't as bad as I thought!

I was able to manage it with diet and exercise and my baby wasn't too big at birth. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

@Rubies: my doctors office skips the one hour test completely because of how inaccurate it can be. Everyone does the three hour.

I can't answer #2, but I had very high levels at my 1-hr...so high they almost went ahead and diagnosed me with GD without bothering with the 3-hr...and I passed the 3-hr with flying colors.

I have GD. To answer #1 - I failed the one hour test and they didn't have me do the 3 hour. I had pre-diabetes pre-pregnancy, so I'm not sure if it got worse or if it's the same as it was before. Either way, I need to keep my numbers under control for the baby.

#2 - It depends on your diet. If you eat a lot of carbs, then it could be a big adjustment. I've found that I need to stay under 60 grams of carbs/meal. Other people may have more or less tolerance though. And carbs doesn't just mean bread/pasta/rice, but fruits too. I kind of had an aversion to sweets at the beginning of my pregnancy so it hasn't been too hard to not eat desserts.

The hardest thing to me is eating out. When I cook at home it's easier to judge portions and carbs than it is a restaurant. I tend to eat a lot of the same things because it's easy and I know that I won't have to worry.

ETA: if you have any more questions, I'm happy to try and answer.

Last week I had the standard one-hour test (gross orange drink, wait one hour, do blood test) and my glucose levels were elevated so now they want me to do the glucose tolerance one.

My questions are:
1) Did anyone have elevated levels after the first test but not the second?
2) If I DO have GD, what sort of changes in my diet will I have to make and how hard is it?

Thanks!
