The nurses were fine, but I don't understand why they needed to come in every single hour during the night. If I was sleeping, they would wake me up. So annoying!

They were wonderful. The nurses at the hospital where I delivered have to go to sensitivity training and customer service training! We found that out because we asked since they were so awesome. We only had two post partum nurses the whole time we were there. They worked 12 hour shifts. We did have one other nurse just check in on us, I think she was the head nurse? She was awesome too. When I was having problems breastfeeding, she demanded that the lc come in and help - twice. :)

Most of my postpartum nurses were great. There was one that I wish we would have asked for a replacement. DS was a champ at nursing right from the start. I was ecstatic. We had one instance where he was wanting to comfort nurse. He was a day or two old, I really wasn't worried. The nurse insisted that he had been nursing for too long and that she needed to take him for a test to check his lungs. That led to him having his lungs suctioned for fluid, even though all xrays came up clear & the doctor came in and ultimately said his lungs were clear. DS fought nursing after that. We ended up with a horrible lactation consultant. I breastfed for a month before switching to formula. I wholeheartedly believe that DS associated BFing with the procedure he had. It makes me angry to this day!

Oh no!! that is so insensitive!! Moms have hard days all the time, I cry sometimes too!!

I loved my nurses they were really great. The only qualm I had was that my hospital had no lactation consultant. I had no idea. That was kind of disappointing, however all the nurses were training in breastfeeding and were a huge help.

My nurses were all pretty good - some we liked more than others, but everyone was helpful and offered advice without being too pushy. The night nurses did seem surprised that we wanted LO to stay with us in the room instead of going to the nursery, but I wanted to get the hang of breastfeeding and figured it was best keeping him in the room. They never pushed pacifiers on us - only offered one if we wanted to try. I guess the only complaint I had was that the first time I tried breastfeeding, the nurse that was helping me had me use a nipple shield because she thought I had flat nipples. She set up a consultation with a LC but that wasn't until the next day and the LC was very surprised she gave the shield to me without explaining why or offering other suggestions to help before using the shield. I got the feeling the nurses and LC's don't really get along...

Mostly good. I really got along with one nurse. I did feel like my stitches should have been checked before I left but the dr just asked if i was in pain and I'm like....well i guess a normal amount. But I ended up retearing and I think I did it while I was in the hospital. So I probably should have spoken up more but I didn't know what normal was for pain after birth.

for the most part i had wonderful nurses adn Lc. excpet one nurse was very rude and wouldnt help with my pain managment even though i kept telling her the nausea medicine that they were giving me was not working, while i was throwing up and trying to bf my baby. it took my anotehr day and nurse for them to switch my medcine. and she would be really condescending when i said stuff to her. other then that the other nurses were not pushy on what i wanted to do and were very sweet and helpful. but man i really dislike that nurse, she was really mean.

I only had one nurse during delivery that was awful and one postpartum that I didn't like as much as the others. The night nurse immediately following my delivery was great though. I passed out the first time I tried to stand up and made a mess of the room. She cleaned it up, helped me to the bathroom, all of that while still being great to me. She even said she wanted to come back to help me stand through the rest of her shift and make sure I was okay and helped me with breastfeeding. I was disappointed when she didn't come back the second night.

I had great nurses with both DDs the whole stay. I was never pushed to use formula or pacifiers. They were helpful with breastfeeding, the lactation consultant stopped in once the first day and then we never saw her again, so the nurses were really my best resource.

They were good with checking up on my vitals and bringing advil but no one was very helpful about breastfeeding. I can't even remember if a lactation consultant showed up even though they said during the hospital tour (of course) that everyone gets to see a LC during their stay. Also, I remember that they were very quick to suggest using pacifiers and formula to get DD back to sleep.

This is what scares me the most about delivery! Not the birthing part, but the after part. I've heard from lots of people that the labor nurses at my hospital are amazing, but the postpartum nurses are not.

I was in L&D twice with my first pregnancy. 2 weeks before I delivered I was hospitalized for 4 days with a kidney infection. Great nurses, horrible covering physicians (my MD was on vacation)
After delivery, my nurses were great when they were in the room attending to me. but they weren't good at follow up. I asked at least four times for someone to come in and help me get the hang of BF and each time I was forgotten (until finally at 3am someone came to help but it was rushed). They were really overwhelmed (short staffed)...there were 11 babies born in 24 hours and I was the only vaginal birth so I think the other woman required more care and I was neglected- enough so that DH swore he wouldn't let me deliver there again.
When I went in to see my OB this time around for my first prenatal appt my DH and I expressed our concerns about the lack of follow up from the nurses. my OB was really disappointed with how we felt. Unfortunately she doesn't deliver anywhere else and I heart my doctor so I am going to give it another go, and go in knowing I might need to be more demanding.

There was one ward manager who gave me a MASSIVE guilt trip when I told her that I was switching to formula for the time being and would go back to breastfeeding when I was home and under less stress. I had bad, immediate PPD and I had just gone through a traumatic labor and delivery and I had a potentially sick baby who was rapidly dropping weight and becoming jaundiced. I was not in the mood for her crap.

Other than that, I was really pretty satisfied with the experience.

I had pretty good nurses but wished they had been a little more helpful with breastfeeding. Rather than explaining what I needed to do and watching me do it they just sort of "forced" DD onto my boob always in the football hold which wasn't that comfortable for either of us. The hospital lactation consultant was a little better but always seemed in a hurry to get somewhere else.

@autumnlove: I'm so sorry that your nurse was not more sensitive about the new-mommy hormone-induced crying. One of my nurses witnessed a new-Mommy ugly cry from me (I was crying because we had to get re-admitted to the hospital because LO lost weight at home, plus the breastfeeding was hurting me so much and I couldn't seem to get it right). She was very nice about it, but I could tell that it made her a little uncomfortable and concerned her. I liked that there were so many different nurses, because there will naturally be some that just don't match your own personality needs. You know?

We had a pretty good experience! Like @sweetkate, we had really good luck with the day nurses, but we got a dud for a night nurse one night. When I was having trouble nursing in the middle of the night, she tried to get me to use sugar water. Despite being exhausted and frustrated, I was still not willing to go there.

Most of my nurses were wonderful, supportive, kind, etc... I had one nurse with both babies that was awful, though. She was very condescending and rude; she kept trying to take over or would give us medical directions that went against the doctor's advice. And both times she would take the kids for tests and then "forget" to bring them back to our room from the nursery. One time my husband caught her reading a newpaper in the hallway when she was supposed to be taking DS for a heel prick test! And her behavior actually delayed us from completing all the necessary tests with DD, so we ended up having to stay in the hospital an extra night. Grrrrrrr.

I was pretty upset with her when I had my first, but I didn't do anything about it. With my second, we ended up filing a complaint against her with the head of L&D. If we have a third and she's on duty, I plan on requesting a new nurse.

My day nurses were absolutely wonderful but the night nurse was awful. During the day everyone was so encouraging, showing me how to do everything and helping when I needed to rest. But the night nurse would only tell me I was doing it all wrong and that is why he is crying. Then she wouldn't do anything to help! She was not encouraging at all and seemed like a very negative person. Looking back I wish I had said something and gotten a different nurse. As a first time mom I didn't need all that negativity.

I had a pretty good experience with postpartum care with the exception with one nurse. Breastfeeding was difficult and painful and I was crying a little when she was checking my vitals. She asked me why I was crying and told me to stop because I signed up to be a Mom. Luckily, I never saw her again!
