I was induced at 38 weeks bc DS1 was measuring small and they weren't sure if it was IUGR or not. My husband and I are average to small people so my ob was on the fence. DS1 was born 5 lbs 2 oz...And all tests/checkups have been normal. DS2 was not measuring small and was also born at 38 weeks (went into labor naturally and was born 6 lbs 4 oz. I think that 2nd and 3rd babies tend to get larger than the first. :)

@winniebee: im not sure but I would think there should be some info online or info you could get from your doctor about IUGR reoccurance rates and such! I have ICP, cholestasis of pregnancy, which has an increased stillbirth rate. My case is very severe and it's my second ICP baby. Many women can't fathom going through the risks. But, I have excellent care and doctors who know the proper protocols so I know I can trust them to get me a healthy baby :)

@BabyPenguinXO: yeah I had multiple ultrasounds throughout my first tri with the second. He was always small but growing on his own curve. But at 38w determined he hadn't grown since 36w so induced me. To be fair he had grown about 6 oz if their ultrasounds were acrruate but obviously that's not much over 2 wks.

I haven't personally had IUGR. However some babies are just small. IUGR diagnosis requires multiple follow up ultrasounds to see if baby is growing further and further behind. Some babies just measure small, but consistently small.

Sadly I've read lots of scenarios where baby measured small on one or two ultrasounds and so they delivered the baby. It sounds like your second they did a good job of following the steps to check if it was actually IUGR or just a small babe!

We are undecided as to whether we will have a 3rd child.

With our first, he was small for gestational age (5 lb 5 oz and 17.5 inches....constitutionally small his whole life though).

With our second, I had suspected IUGR from 28 weeks on so they monitored me with biweekly ultrasounds and biophysical profiles. Ultimately at 38w I was induced for IUGR. He was born 5 lb 6 oz and 19 inches. He seems to have caught up on weight (probably close to 10 lb at 2m and 23 inches though he hasn't had his well visit). It remains to be seen whether he will also just be constitutionally small like his brother and parents or whether his size at birth was truly the result of IUGR.

I'm curious of others experiences. If you were diagnosed with IUGR with one pregnancy did it happen again? Our decision to have a third isn't based on my IUGR diagnosis, I'm really more curious than anything else. My doctor said I would likely be monitored again in a future pregnancy.
