@PrincessBaby: Remind her that you can't get the flu from the flu shot. She might feel a little sick, but it's certainly not the flu. Tell her that your #1 concern is your baby.

On your side note, a lot of people have insurance for "just in case" moments. DH never gets sick, but he still has insurance just in case something happens. We'd rather pay the $2400 deductible that he has than pay $24,000 in hospital bills.

@Ree723: haha:) you're 100% right- newborns are more resilient than we think! But others (not the parents) don't know that so they are cautious;) which works in the mother's advantage!

@MamaMoose: This is exactly how we're going to be when LO comes. Vaccines are required. Hands must be washed. If you're so much as sniffling, you're banned. There will be no smoking at our house (even outside). If you smell like smoke, we're gonna give you something to change into. I know it's probably overkill, but I don't want to take any chances!

@PrincessBaby: Like the others, I strongly suggested my parents get the Tdap and Flue shots. After some grumbling from my dad, he got it done.
I would like my FIL to get it done too, but he's in Peru and limited access to vaccines. He has a pretty strong immune system though and isn't around any kids.

It's going to be a full house for us 2 weeks after the birth. My mom, dad, stepfather and FIL will all be flying in from their respective homes.

I'm going to keep a bottle of sanitizer in every room but other than that not worry too much.

I'm more worried about my neices and nephews that live locally that will want to come and see the baby after the birth. Kids that are in school make me nervous.

@MamaMoose:/@lydg: God, I'm so glad that only one family member smokes now (and she's trying to quit), and if she happens to smoke while we're at her house she will change her shirt, wash her hands and brush her teeth (without me asking) before taking him.

@PrincessBaby: It's all about your comfort level, that is what matters most. Prettybaby was born in March at the tail end of flu season before the whooping cough outbreak happened so it never occured to me. Maybe I wouldn't 'require' it as much as suggest/ask that if they can you'd appreciate it. It's hard to set rules for what other do when it comes to vaccines, but it can't hurt for you to mention it to them. I'm sure most of your family just wants your little lady safe, happy and healthy.

You might even say "My doctor suggested that I ask you all about flu and whooping cough vaccines. S/he said I should anyone in close proximity to lady H should probably get vaccinated" and leave it at that.

@prettylizy: @regberadaisy: Is it an over-reaction to require my parents and sister to get flu and whooping cough vaccines? My IL's come in January as well and of course if I put my family through getting vaccinated, I'm going to make them do it too. I think I feel bad bc my Dad doesn't have insurance and I don't know what my sister's out of pocket costs would be bc she's got crappy insurance....

Wow. Yeah, I worried about it up until the baby got here then it was the farthest thing from my mind. My mom stayed with us for 2.5 months, my ILs a week and my BIl 2 weeks. Them and any visitors were considerate of washing their hands, etc.

@prettylizy: totally agreed. I was more worried about BFing, baby issues and why the heck I was so dang emotional!!!

We didn't have any overnight guests, but we did have quite a few visitors. I wasn't overly concerned about germs, I was more worried about getting the hang of breastfeeding and getting some sleep! lol! We also didn't hole up in the house either, I took her for a walk almost every day in those early days (I really think the sunshine helped with the baby blues for me). FWIW, she never got sick, and was just fine.

I made sure to stock the house with antibacterial soap and sanitizer and the kleenex hand towels before my due date. I also kept DS in a sling as much as possible. ;)

@Ree723: @FutureMrsMcK: @MamaMoose:

Okay, I have sent out some emails after reading all these posts about Tdap. My family will wake up to thoughts of me being a total beeotch this morning, but oh well. Thanks for the advice!

My dad is self-employed and does not have insurance, so I found where he can go to one of the CVS "Minute Clinics" and get the flu shot for about $30 and the Tdap for about $60. My parents struggle financially so I am just going to pay for his shots, to make sure he has them. My mom is on disability, and so she has insurance through the state, so I emailed her to get her ass to her doctor THIS WEEK and get both of them. I also emailed my sister, who has insurance but I think has a huge deductible that I don't know if she's met- so I told everyone to get their shots figured out this week!

We had a big bottle of hand sanitizer on every table. Most people were realy good with washing their hands and that sort of thing. A few people annoyed me by bringing their kids and then not controlling them well. One child kept touching the soles of her shoes and then trying to touch my baby's mouth

We had our parents & my sister who all had extended stays get the TDaP shot. Other than that, we've had visitors hand sanitize. We've also had A LOT of visitors! DS is 6 weeks & no vaccines yet (not until his 2 month visit). Thankfully he's not gotten sick (knock on wood)

We are requiring any overnight guest to get the TDaP vaccine and a flu shot. No shots, no visits. I'm sure some of my in laws think I'm a total bitch for that but I really don't care. Other than that there will be LOTS of hand washing. And if you have even the slightest sniffle you are banned from baby holding (and possibly breathing!)

I was a psycho about it and didn't care. I was nursing so much it was easy for me to control the situation. I would even keep him asleep under my nursing cover if I didn't want people to hold him like my smoky mil! Not sure, but unlike turtle doves LO didn't get shots until week 8-we didn't take him out until then.

I agree with @Ree723: the whooping cough vaccine, and because your LO will be born in the winter I'd ask anyone staying with you to get a flu shot as well. And ditto on the common sense measures as well (regular handwashing, don't let them around her if they're feeling sick, etc).

My mom stayed with us for almost 3 weeks after E was born, and my ILs were over a lot as well, and I asked them all to get the whooping cough vaccine before he was born, and they've all gotten flu shots this year.

@TurtleDoves: Funny that you said newborns are so fragile most people aren't going to want to hold them long, if at all; I was going to say that newborns aren't made of glass and are sturdier than we think, so it will be fine for others to hold her! haha, just shows how differently we all view situations! :-)

Make sure anyone who is going to be visiting for an extended time (longer than a day or two) has the whooping cough vaccine at least two weeks before they come to visit!

Other than that, if you're BF'ing, I think your baby should be fine. She'll get a lot of antibodies from you and as long as you employ common sense (i.e. if someone has a cold, they don't get to hold her, regular handwashing, etc), she should be fine!

We live out of country from our families but my mum flew down to stay for several weeks after the baby was born and we had lots of our friends popping in and out regularly. Again, just use common sense and it all should be fine, but I definitely think the whooping cough vaccine is a must!

We only allowed family to visit
Made them wag their hands
Held baby for like 2mins an passed him back
Kept baby wrapped up tight
Honestly--they will be sleeping most the time and they are so fragile that people will only hold them for a sec, if they do.
Then on day 28 they will get their shots so you can kind of exhale at that point.
It's not worth baby getting sick, so be mean if you have to;) my ped said if a newborn gets sick it's pretty much a ticket to the ped's ICU. So that straightens us out! Me & DH are totally overprotective now:/

I had a lot of visitors and overnight guests the first month. I was so stressed about breastfeeding and lack of sleep so I didn't really have time to obsess about germs. DH made sure everyone washed their hands and used tissues, hand sanitizers, etc and he told sick people to stay away! ETA: we did make sure our overnight guests had the whooping cough vaccine!

Good luck!

@highwire: We live in FL so I didn't even think about winter diseases until DH mentioned this! They are coming from Louisiana, where it will be pretty cold in December, so now I'm all worried:( I will quarantine their asses and they won't ever lay eyes on the baby if they're sick! I don't care how much they spent to get here!

Ha, listening in! I hate that our LOs are born during cold and flu season and I'm worried about all of the visitors coming and going. But I've tried just not thinking about it because it stresses me out and hopefully everyone won't be offended when they are asked to wash their hands repeatedly.

Hopefully some people will chime in with advice!

We live out of state, so my family will travel in and stay longer periods of time since they have to fly....My parents are coming in and staying with us for a week right when H is born, and my brother and SIL will come and stay for 2 days. Then when they all leave, my sister is coming to stay with me for a week.

DH just pointed out tonight that with so many visitors at our house, they need to be careful about germs. So now I'm worried they're all going to drag cooties into our house, or have a cold or something.

Did you have lots of visitors after your LO was born? Did you have people staying with you to help out? What do I need to do and what do I make them do in order to keep H as healthy as possible around all of these Cootie Carriers?
